Amy,

Imagine someone asking you twenty years from now, "what did you do on Dec 31, 1999."

In twenty years, I believe I'll tell them that I spent the night with family and friends secure in the belief that my investment in Intel would be worth A WHOLE LOT MORE as I moved towards 2020.

Barry

Amy J,
RE:"Congress advises: Get your cash in Nov, definitely by Dec 15. Store 2
weeks of supplies, "just like you would for a winter storm."

Whatever you do: make sure you do something fun on New Years Eve.
Imagine someone asking you twenty years from now, "what did you do
on Dec 31, 1999?" Do you really want to say: I hid in a closet? Prepare,
but don't forget to have fun/enjoy. "

Interestingly the government double speaks about what to do for Y2K.
One minute Greenspan says don't withdraw money from the bank. Next minute some other agency say "be prepared", the government prints $50B just in case.
Down here in FL, when a hurricane comes near, the shelves at the grocery stores get wiped clean, gas and ice...gone, plywood gone etc.
All that and we pretty much know what a hurricane can do. On the other hand, NO ONE KNOWS what will happen with Y2K and the scale is worldwide not just a 50 mile stretch of coastline. Maybe nothing, but not knowing that, I've seen enough to know that people will panic at the last minute...or month. Out of panic comes opportunity, however.
Americans tend to focus on just the USA...how many nuclear power plants around the world might not be compliant? How many here are compliant?
Some of these power systems can't be tested or haven't been tested yet because they have to shut them down first. The list of possible debacles goes on and on. People that generally dismiss Y2k with the "oh well, we'll just have to go back to doing it by hand agin" forget that most people don't know how to do it by hand anymore and that there are near enough hands.
Apparently, starting around July 1st, testing of "fixed" systems will begin. If you start hearing things like "it ain't fixed and there isn't enough time to do it", I'd start to worry about it.
The panic ahas really already started. There is a 5 month wait just to get a hard copy of your Social Security records....

So what do you have planned for New Years Y2k?
Jim
