re: rambus inside (or "on top") intc will have to explain why camino is bigger better faster than anything else out there. they could try to educate us clods as to the increase in bits and gigs enabled by by increased bus speeds and the opening of the bottleneck to memory flow, or simply tell us that rambus inside is the reason for the increase. you are right that intc or amd or compact has no reason to toot rmbs horns to the detriment of their own brand name, but if it presents a simple way to explain to the pc buyers that they are getting the newest fastest tech. ,why not? cadillacs Northstar System is a perfect example of a brand hyping a tech. advantage.(you can't park here if you don't have northstar). of course intc could just say we are the best, take our much revered word for it. it seems to me that as the buying public gets more sophisticated they would respond to a little tech. hype. hell, for all we know, rmbs may have agreements with licensees that demands or prohibits the use of rmbs logos.(what is a rmbs logo?)(a speeding bus with mercury wings attached and a stream of 1's and 0"s as rocket exhaust streaming out the back?) glen, great post. an ad in a real magazine, not fud in the supermarket tabloid EN. capt. rocky

glenn, dave,
re. marketing. this is a rookie/non-techie/consumer take on the toshiba ad.

the ad says...
By now, you know the tremendous benefits that Toshiba Rambus DRAM offers. You know, for instance, that its high-speed, narrow interface is ideal for low-power applications requiring large bandwidths from memory components.
the ad means...rdram in laptops and portable devices.

the ad says...
That it lets semiconductor memory keep pace with faster and faster generations of processors and controllers. You know how well it solves memory bottleneck problems. And especially, how efficiently it opens the floodgates for new types of designs.
the ad means...we have lots of new goodies for ya. you ain't seen nothin yet!!!

the ad says...
As a result, high-end, server-enhanced applications like 3D graphics, video conferencing, speech recognition and networking can be sure of having the smallest die available, along with increased performance and reduced power consumption.
the ad means...low heat! great for laptops!

the ad says...
With Toshiba RDRAM®, you'll get data rates from 600MHz to 800 MHz, allowing up to1.6 Gbyte/sec peak bandwidth per channel. It also offers 32 dependant bands, for reduced latency. Separate data/address/control busses, for significantly reduced bus turnaround time. And a choice of 128Mb or 144Mb RDRAM, for 512Mb density per channel and/or 256MB per module. Plus, Rambus-based graphics boards use fewer signal layers, fewer components and less board space than alternative memory solutions, which translates to lower system costs.
the ad means...rmbs is back to collecting graphics board royalties.

the ad says...
The best part is, since all our fabs worldwide are utilizing 0.20mm technology, you can get all this performance right now. So you can take advantage of tomorrow's developments today. And get a leading-edge position in your marketplace.
the ad means...samsung! you got competition buddy. and that means lower prices!
