Mike,

My level of fear is not so high as to prevent me from investing. If the CF standard is challenged I still will have plenty of time to get out of the investment with a profit. Again, the industry is just ramping up with CF slots and likely has several generations of product already in blueprints. A good example of this is Nikon and Kodak who have had excellent success with several "iterations" of their digital camera line with CF as the removable media of choice.

Nobody can predict how this situation will play out. I am not trying to say that SanDisk will reach the status of the "Wintel Duopoly". If this is the criterion with which we plan our investment strategy then we will certainly miss out on a lot of good alternatives.

Mike,

Seriously, if it's reasonably possible that the industry might be susceptible to changing the defacto standard, that situation is a symptom of a weak value chain that isn't strong enough to support the standard.

The industry has the opportunity to turn on a dime if they see a more viable alternative. The defacto standard which will dethrone CF may come out of a field of research competitive with flash memory. Flash memory products, or any product for that matter, which fit into a CF slot are also threatening. That is, as long as they don't incorporate SanDisk intellectual property.

Recall that SNDK has already defeated the big behemouth known as Intel (who subsequently shelved its flash memory product; The Miniature Card) and has distinct advantages over Toshiba's offering (SmartMedia).

Also, don't underestimate the power of the consumer.
