Yeah,,, Portland boneheads. ARE YOU LISTENING.

Why in the world should T invest in infrastructure if they aren't given the opportunity to recoup their investment and build a profitable business.

This derruglation thing has gone too far and doesn't work when attempting to establish new types/ways of communications that require $$$ investment$$$. How in the world can the council in Portland assume a competitive environment built on the investment dollars of one company? A company that is investing billions simply to gain access to this network? This activity could not only kill the deal between T and TWX, but could very well slow (in a signficant way) the deployement of next generation bundled services. These guys should all be thrown out of office!!!!

>>Sten said he would be disappointed if the company chose to abandon Portland residents but that other alternatives, including a high-speed Internet solution from local phone companies and various wireless alternatives, would fill the breach.<<

I agree that I found this the most amazing part of the whole article. In one breath they declare AT&T an evil monopoly keeping people from choice and in the next say "heck- who needs them anyway, there are lots of other choices".
LOL

What boneheads!

Let's see:

"Portland and Multnomah County attorneys argued that opening the network to Internet rivals was integral to ensuring competition and consumer choice in the future."

Any competition here? Well, it looks like it:

"Sten said he would be disappointed if the company chose to abandon Portland residents but that other alternatives, including a high-speed Internet solution from local phone companies and various wireless alternatives, would fill the breach."

Does anyone suppose there is ANY competition for local phone service?

Hell no. That is what this is about:

"The decision also could affect an earlier announcement that Portland would be one of 10 cities serving as a test market for AT&T's phone service delivered via TCI cable, Morris said."

So what is more important (if you aren't a beauracratic nitwit), competition where there is already plenty, or competition where there is NONE?
