Re: DSL Investments

Raymond, Dave, Bernard, Denver(I caught the ADTN post), Frank,

I'm glad to see all the DSL interest again. As you know, I've got a list that I'm working on too. It's going to be interesting to share all our ideas.

Primarily, I'm trying to find out who is positioned to sell products to; Data CLECs, ISPs, ILECs, and GTE. Obviously, the ILECs would be the best target because they will EVENTUALLY be spending the most money on DSL rollouts. But the Netopia idea threw me for a loop(no pun intended).

Secondary consideration is, who are the DSL players in the best position to be acquired? As Bernard has previously mentioned, this is almost a given when that time arrives. It's will almost be a mirror image of what happened to the data networkers when the traditional telecom equipment makers moved into the data space. So when the carriers start to really roll out DSL services, the writing is on the wall that the smaller DSL specialists will be purchased by the big telecom equipment players. Problem with this is you have to risk buying companies selling at PSR in the hundreds with no PE.

Third, I'm definitely trying to stay away from anything that is going to be a commodity. DSL modems sold direct to the consumer is one example.

Fourth, it would be nice to stay away from legacy products. It's always risky when a company has to phase out older technology. But the bright side is at least they have a PE.

Fifth, maybe a pure play?

Sixth, etc..

Not easy to figure it all out. Very time consuming.
