A very reasonable reply!

Now: I think it would be nice if we could get back to a civilized discussion of whether Schwab stock is a good investment at these levels or not. I think it is overpriced still, especially given the competition from above by Merril Lynch and other (perhaps former) full-service brokers. Other people think that its potential warrants a higher price.

As a longstanding customer of Fidelity brokerage and then Quick and Reilly, I fully support the concept of the intermediate brokerage that has efficient on-line trading but offers personal service to straighten out glitches or explain problems. We have an excellent local office of Quick and Reilly who can fix all kinds of odd situations that I get myself into: acquisitions, splits, reverse splits, warrants, etc. They have never made a mistake --in several hundred transactions.

Obviously people who bought and held Schwab when it was priced at around 20 were very percipient; whether the run-up of the last six months is sustainable is another question.
