An open mind is just that... open. One can place any choice in that open space at any time. But once someone makes a choice, they tend to add to it and surround it; essentially they cement it into place. If they then find that they're starting to have doubts about their choice, they can no longer change it without tearing the entire structure down. If they decide that they are unwilling or unable to rebuild this structure then ultimately even the realization that there are other choices is a threat to them.

Sort of off topic: I've got Cartoon Network running in the background -- 48 hours of nothing but Bugs Bunny this weekend. Bugs has been almost as influential on my world-view as anyone else. He never started fights but he always won them, and he usually did so simply by turning his opponents' anger and violence back on them. Admirable. I strive for that sort of balance.
