Rambus licenses its technology to others who then sell Rambus architecture ICs (Logic or memory) to System users. e.g. Nintendo 64 is believed to be a major user of Rambus chips supplied by NEC. Will RMBS soar like an Eagle or be doomed to walk the ice floes like a Penguin?

SI - Rambus (RMBS) - Eagle or Penguin

[Elroy] It's going to take someone more knowledgeable than me to explain why the share p...

It's going to take someone more knowledgeable than me to explain why the share price is down on this news.....

Rambus Reports Second Quarter 2024 Financial Results

Delivered $56.7 million in product revenue, up 13% sequentially

The Company also generated $70.4 million in cash provided by operating activities in the second quarter.

They are guiding product revenue up about 15% sequentially. But I can't find anything that says
that right now. So Rambus is ahead there. Although, the data center
market isn't up to 7200 MT/s, it's moving fast and it's very good to
be the leader there if you're a Rambus shareholder.

Here's some good extra info on the current RCD market:

New Info on Companion Chips Market | RMBS Message Board Posts (investorvillage.com)

[Doug M.] Renesas is second to Rambus in the RDIMM RCDs at 6400 MT/s | RMBS Message Board ...

Renesas is second to Rambus in the RDIMM RCDs at 6400 MT/s | RMBS Message Board Posts (investorvillage.com)

This was close, but Rambus got here first:

New 7200 MT/s RCD Supports Ambitious Server Roadmap - Rambus

Also, if you click on the link of the press release, you'll see that Rambus'
announcement here said "available today."

News | RMBS Message Board Posts (investorvillage.com)

I can't find any Renesas blog or press release where they say that they're at
least sampling DDR5 RCDs at 7200 MT/s. They've announced client clock
drivers (CKDs) at that speed, but that's at speeds at or above 6400 MT/s.
And we're not there yet.

But we're not at 7200 MT/s for server RCDs yet either - but it's very good
to see Rambus leading the pack for the lucrative and fast moving data
center market.

[Doug M.] Good question - the answer is that many Renesas people left Renesas for Rambus. ...

Good question - the answer is that many Renesas people left Renesas for Rambus.
Rambus has built an excellent buffer chip team from Renesas - as well as from
their Inphi acquisition about six years ago - as well as internally.

Things changed somewhat there after IDT was sold to Renesas. Also, it's very good
for Rambus to be the only US supplier in the critical buffer / companion chip business.
The bottom line is that the datacenter won't work without the RCDs that go into the DIMMs -
and with a 40% market share (which Rambus has been repeatedly reiterating), Rambus plays
a critical role in the data center market.

Here's some examples of the moves from IDT / Renesas to Rambus. I

Sean Fan - Rambus

(24) Rami Sethi | LinkedIn

(24) Sam Patel | LinkedIn

(24) Yue Yu | LinkedIn

(24) Al Fang | LinkedIn

24 Year Director at IDT joined Rambus as VP of Engineering | RMBS Message Board Posts (investorvillage.com)

VP of Engineering | RMBS Message Board Posts (investorvillage.com)

(24) Rex REN | LinkedIn

And the fact that they keep on coming is a good sign - I know that Rambus is
expanding in Atlanta:

(24) Steven Finn | LinkedIn

PS: I could probably find more but the above is a good illustration.

[Elroy] Thanks for the info. The fixed fee
patent portion is really important because both Samsung and Hynix signed up for a decade
about 2 years ago. Micron is due for renewal as well and they should sign up before the
year is out. In aggregate, that business is about $220 million and stable because it's fixed fee.
But it provides a lot of excellent cash flow for Rambus to work with their customers on the
many complex problems that the industry needs for things like HBM growth, GDDR6 and
beyond, memory modules, CXL, etc.

The good thing for Rambus shareholders is that we've been told many times that the silicon IP
business should grow at 10% to 15% annually. So, everything Rambus does with HBM controllers
(as well as GDDR6 controllers, PCIe, CXL, etc) shows up in their silicon IP revenue - here they are:

Interface IP - Rambus

The good thing is that this should grow like clockwork because there's so much business that Rambus
has expertise in for these areas - just check here for HBM3e:

HBM3E: Everything You Need to Know - Rambus

That's not the only area of growth for Rambus - this below is doing quite well too and Rambus expects
to have 40% market share in the DDR5 market for their registered clock drivers and a 20%
share for their companion chips - right now the TAMs for those markets is about $750 million
and $600 million respectively and growing. The companion chips will grow even more when
the AI PC proliferates and the memory modules will need these chips at and above 6,400 MT/s
(PMIC, SPD hub and temperature sensors) for the memory modules.

Memory Interface Chips - Rambus

Also, Rambus is thinking big about the PMIC market as it relates to memory - and the buffer (RCD)
market too - we can see in Rambus HBM patents that buffers will be needed for the communication
between logic and memory.

And lastly there's this - Rambus has already prototyped a sophisticated controller chip - but
this won't be an important growth driver until CXL 3.0 comes out in the 2026 timeframe and
forward. It's really a 2027 plus growth opportunity. But Micron (and many others) think that
CXL can be a big deal to help optimize the data center:

CXL Memory Initiative - Rambus

Rambus' Larry Carr is on the board of directors and he's also the president. I think that's
because Rambus' expertise in serial attached memory goes back decades:

Homepage - Compute Express Link

[Elroy] Thanks for all those links. It sounds like RMBS is perhaps deeply involved with SK's HBM efforts.

Someone else told me that RMBS today is mostly involved with DDR4 and 5 chips, and HBM is a secondary area for them, one which is not yet major. Does that sounds correct?

I'm wondering why - since there is so much positive mood around anything HBM - RMBS is trading at a stratospheric valuation?

[Doug M.] This one might even be better - it also looks like Rambus has improved on Hynix'...

This one might even be better - it also looks like Rambus has improved on Hynix's heat dissipation
structure:

US20220076714A1 - Methods and Circuits for Streaming Data to Processing Elements in Stacked Processor-Plus-Memory Architecture - Google Patents

<<Thermal management is a serious challenge for this type of design given the high power consumption of both the memory and logic processors. This strategic move is designed to leverage differentiated technologies, further extending its lead over competitors.

According to industry insiders cited by South Korean media outlet ET News, SK Hynix plans to enhance HBM with new capabilities, including computation, caching, and network memory. To support this development, SK Hynix has already invested in securing essential Intellectual Property (IP).

By 2025, SK Hynix targets the rollout of its sixth-generation HBM (HBM4), featuring integrated system semiconductors such as memory controllers. From the seventh generation (HBM4E) onwards, SK Hynix plans to embed computing, caching, and network memory functions.

Traditionally, memory controllers managing HBM functions are installed separately. SK Hynix intends to place the memory controller at the bottom layer of the HBM stack using a base die, which will enhance power efficiency and signal transmission speed by integrating the controller within the HBM.

Furthermore, SK Hynix is exploring the optimization of HBM by adding computing, caching, and networking capabilities, potentially embedding some GPU or CPU functions within HBM.

Sources indicate that the inclusion of caching and network memory aims to boost AI semiconductor computational speed. These enhancements are expected to be customized based on specific customer requirements.

Currently, AI chips typically position the GPU at the center, surrounded by HBM, with system semiconductors such as memory controllers added separately. This configuration can lead to signal transmission delays and higher power consumption due to inter-chip gaps.

Integrating various system semiconductor functions within HBM is anticipated to lower latency, reduce power consumption, and enhance overall spatial efficiency, resulting in more compact and efficient designs. With Samsung Electronics and Micron entering the HBM market, SK Hynix aims to sustain its market leadership through a differentiation strategy.

SK Hynix has reportedly secured several system semiconductor IPs for HBM. The manufacturing of the base die will be outsourced to wafer foundries like TSMC. SK Hynix also plans to leverage relevant IP from IC design clients and wafer foundry partners to bolster its offerings.

[Elroy] I've bought a bit of RMBS recently. Here's just one:

Important Keynote at the Upcoming Memcon | RMBS Message Board Posts (investorvillage.com)

And if ChatGPT was so smart, it would mention that a Rambus
employee is on the CXL board - and that's no small feat. ChaGPT
should say that this is a sign of good things to come for Rambus in
CXL. If not, don't invite Larry Carr to this esteemed board:

Meet the Board (computeexpresslink.org)

Also, if ChatGPT was so smart, it would say that Micron is calling
for CXL to be about a $20 billion industry by 2030 - up from zero today.
ChatGPT should also say that Rambus has one of the best all around
foundations for CXL in the industry - memory interface expertise
(particularly serial), SerDes expertise, silicon security expertise, etc.
Noone else has all of that - and that's why many Microchip Tech
people came over to Rambus.

I'm glad that ChatGPT isn't as good of a thinker as some say - at least
not yet. If I wait another 19 years to post here (assuming that I can),
maybe ChatGPT will be smart enough then.
If some consider smart is regurgitating from textbooks, etc. I certainly don't.

[Don Green] I asked ChatGPT Is Rambus a good technology Rambus is a technology company t...

I asked ChatGPT

Is Rambus a good technology

Rambus is a technology company that designs and licenses high-speed memory and interface technologies for use in a wide range of electronic devices, such as computers, servers, and mobile devices.

The quality and effectiveness of Rambus technology depends on a variety of factors, such as the specific application, the compatibility with other hardware and software components, and the level of adoption and support within the industry.

Rambus has developed a range of memory and interface technologies over the years, including RDRAM, XDR DRAM, and GDDR6. These technologies have been used in various products and applications, such as gaming consoles, high-performance computing systems, and networking equipment.

Overall, Rambus technology can be effective and valuable for certain applications and use cases, but it is not universally considered to be a "good" technology for all purposes. Like any technology, it has its strengths and weaknesses, and its usefulness depends on the specific requirements and constraints of the system or application it is being used in.

[Don Green] Chart of the Day: Rambus - Semiconductors for the World The Chart of the Day be...

Chart of the Day: Rambus - Semiconductors for the World

The Chart of the Day belongs to the semiconductor company Rambus (RMBS). ( RMBS) sank into a new 52-week low yesterday, and could be a company to watch at the open. The company’s stock fell to as low as $11.30 yesterday after opening at $11.30. By the closing bell, the company's stock was at $11.33 a share for a loss of 0.87%.

While no company wants to see their stocks fall into a new 52-week low, opportune investors may have reason to celebrate. Bullish investors with a healthy tolerance for risk may view this as a chance to buy stocks as distressed prices before a bounce back. With that said, whenever a stock falls into new negative territory, there usually is a compelling reason for it. Investors bearish on the stock might see the stock reaching its lowest price in a year as a sign of growing downward momentum and take it as a good reason to sell their shares. Bulls, though, could likely see a new 52-week low as the stock hitting its low point and anticipate a recovery in the share price.

Rambus Inc. saw 802,281 shares of its stock trade hands, that's out of 111.73 million shares outstand. The stock has an average daily volume of 720,593 shares. After hitting a new 52-week low, Rambus Inc. enters the new trading day with a market cap of 1.27 billion, a 50-day SMA of $12.10 and a 200-day SMA of $12.76

Rambus Inc. now has a P/E ratio of 163.3.

[Don Green] Rambus Inc. Fell More Than 25% TuesdaySoft Q3 results, weak next-quarter guidance, a panic-flavored headcount reduction, and major business deals going south.hat more could go wrong?

PHOTO: RAMBUS.

What: Shares of Rambus ( NASDAQ:RMBS) fell as much as 26% on Tuesday, following the technology licensing vendor's release of third-quarter results.

So what: The report itself was a fairly mild disappointment. Sales rose 6% year over year to $73.8 million, falling short of Wall Street's $76.2 million consensus target. On the bottom line, adjusted earnings rose 8% to $0.14 per share, just a penny below the analyst view. By themselves, these results might have resulted in a moderate share price drop but hardly a 25% rout.

But Rambus followed up with fourth-quarter revenue guidance of approximately $74 million, once again far below the Street's $83.5 million consensus. And even this weak forecast comes with a big caveat: "Achieving revenue in this range will require that the Company sign new customer agreements for patent and solutions licensing among other matters," said the company.

These future achievements are far from guaranteed, and Rambus may very well miss its own meek revenue target in the fourth quarter.

Now what: And if that weren't enough, Rambus also took this opportunity to announce a large-scale headcount reduction. The company's payroll will shrink by 8% over the next two quarters, yielding annual cost savings of roughly $10 million.

Furthermore, CEO Ronald Black took time out in the earnings call to cover a couple of serious business setbacks. "One of the larger, more complex licensing and broad partnership agreements we were negotiating in our security business has stalled, and at this point we are unlikely to see it close," Black said. Furthermore, technical issues with a new memory technology led to missing the product qualification window for another large customer.

On the upside, Rambus recently signed a royalty-bearing license agreement with IBM (NYSE: IBM), covering the rights to use Rambus' high-speed memory and serial data link technologies.

As of Monday night, Rambus shares had climbed 36% higher over the previous 52 weeks. After Tuesday's drastic plunge, the stock is trading slightly down year over year and 34% below the 52-week highs it reached in June. The stock could still fall much lower, as it floats atop a P/E ratio of 41 times trailing earnings. The forward P/E ratio is a much more affordable 15 times current estimates, but we'll see how long that lasts when analysts start adjusting their earnings targets based on the new Rambus guidance.

With or without the IBM deal, Rambus still strikes me as one of the riskiest stocks on the market. Personally, I wouldn't touch this ticker with a 10-foot memory stick.

[Don Green] Rambus getting hammered?

[hdl] this thread is dead.

[hdl] rmbs over $12/share

[hdl] marketwatch.com

[Don Green] Good post, thanks for taking the time.
