Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib melted down as Republicans voted to remove raging bigot Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

On Thursday Republicans voted to remove Ilhan Omar, a national security threat, from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The vote was 218 to 211.

Ilhan Omar married her own brother in order to defraud US immigration.

The Democrat was finally removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Ilhan Omar’s partner-in-crime didn’t take it too well.

Nikki Haley is teasing that she will run for president in 2024.

Donald Trump mocked her on Truth Social saying “Nikki has to follow her heart, not her honor. She should definitely run!”

The Hill reported:

“Nikki has to follow her heart, not her honor. She should definitely run!” he wrote, including an older clip of Haley saying that she would support Trump if he ran in 2024 and would not jump into the race if the former president did so.

Trump also shared a video of Nikki Haley speaking to reporters in April of 2021.

In the video, Haley tells reporters she would not run if Donald Trump did run.

Haley is reportedly going to break this promise as reports have claimed she is going to run for President in 2024 despite the fact Trump has already announced.

The delusion is strong with this one. A report on Saturday indicates that former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, mired around 3% in GOP Presidential Primary polls, looks ready to launch a quixotic bid next month for the Oval Office anyway.

David Drucker, a writer for The Dispatch, claims Haley’s senior aides are prepared to assume essential campaign roles once Haley gives the green light. She already possesses the necessary infrastructure thru her prominent political action committee and political nonprofit to build a ground game and campaign operation.

Rep. Ilhan Omar blasts GOP's 'vengeance tour' for their 'master' Donald TrumpRep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., attacked House Republicans on MSNBC's "The ReidOut" Wednesday for working to have her removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The House voted Thursday to kick Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar off the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a decision that Republicans vowed to take because of Omar’s history of anti-Semitic and anti-American remarks.

The resolution was approved in a 218-211 vote after a heated debate in which Democrats accused Republicans of racism and hypocrisy and claimed that the GOP is only policing Democrats for questionable behavior. Omar and several other Democrats openly accused Republicans of racism.

"I am Muslim, I am an immigration, and interestingly, from Africa," Omar said. "Is anyone surprised that I am being targeted? Is anyone surprised that I am somehow deemed unworthy to speak about American foreign policy, or that they see me as a powerful voice that needs to be silenced."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., dismissed GOP claims that they were being "consistent" with past practices by seeking Omar’s dismissal.

"Consistency? There is nothing consistent with the Republican Party’s continued attack, except for the racism and incitement of violence against women of color in this body," Ocasio-Cortez said. "This is about targeting women of color in the United States of America."

"Why is this member being targeted today?" asked Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y. "Could it be the way that she looks? Could it be the way her religious practices? Because it’s clear if she were on the other side of the aisle, we would not be having this debate today."

But Republicans said Omar’s past comments make her unsuitable to sit on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., who chairs the House Ethics Committee, said Republicans are only following the "roadmap previously approved" by the Democrat-controlled 117th Congress, which Democrats used to remove a Republican member from all House committees.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., said she has seen Omar’s anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism firsthand.

"As a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I’ve sat there and heard the representative actually spew anti-American rhetoric as well," Malliotakis said of Omar. "I’ve been in that committee room where the representative equates Israel and the United States to Hamas and the Taliban. Absolutely unacceptable for a member of that committee."

The Republican justification for removing Omar from the committee was spelled out in the four-page resolution. It states that in 2019, Omar suggested that Jewish people were buying U.S. political support when she said, "It’s all about the Benjamins, baby," which struck many – including many Democrats – as an anti-Semitic trope.

Omar also accused some Jewish Americans of having "allegiance to a foreign country," which again prompted backlash among Republicans and Democrats who said it was offensive and anti-Semitic to suggest supporting Israel is the same as having a foreign allegiance.

A month later, Omar described the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. that killed nearly 3,000 people as, "some people did something." Malliotakis said that line was especially egregious to lawmakers from New York, and is "unacceptable" for any member of the committee to say.

In 2021, Omar called Israel an "apartheid state," and lumped the U.S. and Israel in with Hamas and the Taliban as political entities that have committed "unthinkable atrocities."

The resolution says members of the Foreign Affairs Committee should be held to an "equal standard of conduct due to the international sensitivities and national security concerns under the jurisdiction of this committee."

"Representative Omar, by her own words, has disqualified herself from serving on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, a panel that is viewed by nations around the world as speaking for Congress on matters of international importance and national security," it said.

A ' James Bond villain' oligarch who is said to keep sharks in his office to intimidate his enemies has had his mansion raided in Ukraine as part of a sweeping anti-corruption clampdown.

Ihor Kolomoisky, a warlord who helped Volodymyr Zelensky's rise to power, was targeted by the SBU, Ukraine's security service yesterday.

The 59-year-old tycoon was pictured standing in his hunting lodge residence near Dnipro wearing tracksuits and slippers as he was confronted by the agents.

Investigators are probing claims Kolomoisky embezzled around £1billion from two oil companies where he was previously the majority shareholder, Ukrainian media says.

The Ukrainian government seized stakes in the energy companies, oil producer Ukrnafta and refiner Ukrtatnafta, as part of moves to consolidate the war effort.

The oil baron, who was named in the Panama Papers, is accused of dodging customs duties to rack up his huge fortune, which included owning the TV channel that launched Zelensky's comedy career.

He backed the then-actor during his 2019 presidential bid with his media empire, although Zelensky has distanced himself from the billionaire businessman.

The mogul, who has been sanctioned by the US, also 'laundered $5.5billion through a tangle of shell companies, purchasing factories and commercial properties across the U.S. heartland,' the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists claims.

He is accused of heading up one of the biggest ever Ponzi schemes in the US and is one of the biggest real estate landlords in the US midwest.

Kolomoisky was born into a Jewish family in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, when it was part of the Soviet Union.

After the collapse of the USSR, he started making a fortune importing foreign goods, and trading local metals on the international market.

A US diplomat said, according to the Spectator: 'I think Kolomoisky is super-dangerous. He was one of the first oligarchs who began to act like a warlord.'

But doubts crept in about the reality of his finances and government officials found billions missing from his empire.

The government was forced to give a mammoth £4.5billion bailout to PrivatBank to stop it collapsing, and soon found money hidden in faraway places such as Cleveland, Ohio.

Investigators say he oversaw a laundering scheme that stole billions from unknowing Ukrainian depositors.

Loans that were publicly stated by PrivatBank were actually being redirected to to overseas entities using shell companies and offshore accounts.

Kolomoisky vowed that he would turn around the fortunes of the steel heartlands of the US Midwest, but predictably it never happened, instead using the unsuspecting regions as the ideal place to hide his fortune.

Despite his history of corruption, he remained largely untouched by the government until recently, because of his power and his influence over the militia.

But now, authorities have clamped down on him as part of Zelensky's widening probe into corruption.

The search came ahead of a key summit with the EU and appeared to be part of a push by Kyiv to reassure key military and financial donors in European capitals and Washington that Ukraine is tackling systemic graft.

'We are carrying out the task set by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and simultaneously delivering a global blow to the internal enemy,' announced Vasyl Maliuk, the head of Ukraine's security service, the SBU.

'Every criminal who has the audacity to harm Ukraine, especially in the conditions of war, must clearly understand that we will put handcuffs on him.'

The raids also targeted former interior minister Arsen Avakov, said the head of Zelensky's party David Arakhamia.

Law enforcement also raided tax offices in the capital and senior customs officials were fired, Arakhamia said.

In the biggest political shakeup since the launch of Moscow's assault on Ukraine, authorities last week fired around a dozen senior figures, including defence officials and a top aide to the president's office.

The raids on Wednesday came two days before Zelensky was expected to host a summit with the European Union, which has urged reforms to facilitate deeper integration.

The SBU also said it had uncovered a scheme by the head of the Kyiv tax office over 'multimillion-dollar' fraud schemes, accusing the official of abusing a position of authority.

In an address to the nation on Tuesday, Zelensky vowed officials would take further measures to sweep away graft, saying 'all the necessary steps have already been taken.'

'People in the government who do not meet the basic requirements of the state and society should not occupy their seats,' he said.

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor General's Office said on Wednesday that they had informed a number of senior officials they were being investigated for crimes including misappropriation of state funds and misuse of state property.

Last week the defence ministry announced the resignation of deputy minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov, who was involved in logistical support for the army.

That resignation came after the ministry was accused of signing food contracts at prices two to three times higher that market rates for basics.

Despite being vocal about fighting corruption, Zelensky himself has been embroiled in corruption scandals in the past.

He is now working to drum up political backing for Ukraine at a critical time in the conflict, with Russian forces claiming to have captured fresh ground in the eastern Donetsk region.

We talked last month about Redbox Entertainment Inc., a company that (1) went public in October 2021 by merging with a special purpose acquisition company at $10 per share, (2) traded as high as $17.93, (3) then traded down to $5.60, (4) then agreed to be acquired by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Inc. for about $0.69 per share in stock, an 88% discount to its trading price, and (5) then traded down to $2.58 per share. That was weird! Two weird things were:

Why would the company agree to sell for $0.69 per share when it was trading at $5.60? (“We were bringing assets that were helpful in terms of the debt, cleaning up of the capital structure, access to new cash,” Chicken Soup’s chief executive officer sort of explained.)Why would people buy stock for $2.58 when it is going to be merged out of existence at $0.69?You might have told a story like “the deal won’t close and the stock will shoot up as people realize the great value of an independent Redbox,” but there is no evidence for that; in fact Redbox’s controlling shareholders had approved the deal so the odds of it falling apart are low.

Or you might have told a story like “the stock will trade down to $0.69 as people realize what is happening,” but that story would have been wrong. Redbox has rallied. It closed at $9.47 yesterday, and was up again this morning; at noon today it was trading at about $12.89 on heavy volume, tons of social-media enthusiasm and absolutely no news. Meanwhile Chicken Soup’s stock hasn’t done much; it closed yesterday at $7.31, making the merger consideration — 0.087 Chicken Soup shares per Redbox share — worth about $0.64 per Redbox share. You can buy a Redbox share for $12.89 today, and when the merger closes you’ll get 0.087 Chicken Soup shares. Or you can buy a whole Chicken Soup share today for $7.31, and when the merger closes you’ll still have a whole Chicken Soup share. One Chicken Soup share, which you can buy for $7.31, is worth about 11 times as much as 0.087 Chicken Soup shares, which you can buy for $12.89. Why?

I dunno. But there are two lessons here. One is that the essential function of a meme stock is to be a Schelling point: A meme stock is a stock that you want to buy because other people want to buy it. How a stock becomes a meme stock is, to me, a mysterious process, but there is no obvious reason that “people think it has a lot of fundamental value” would be a particularly important part of the process. (Really, “a stock that you buy because other people want to buy it because it has good long-term cash flows” is the opposite of a meme stock; that’s just a regular stock.) You want your meme stocks to be fun; you want the story to be vivid; you want the online discussions where you egg each other on to buy the stock to have a sense of drama and comedy. At Quartz last month, Scott Nover wrote an article titled “ Redbox is the dumbest meme stock yet”:

On Reddit, there’s been chatter about a short squeeze, but only about 29% of Redbox’s public float has been sold short, according to data published by FactSet. Short squeezes work when so much of a company’s stock is shorted that when buyers drive it up, shorts have to re-enter the market by buying new shares to cover their own loss, sending the stock even higher. (By contrast, 140% of GameStop’s float was shorted when retail traders took it to the moon in January 2021.)

When the sale to Chicken Soup for the Soul closes in the next few months, Redbox stockholders will be paid out at $.49 a share. “I don’t see any scenario where an investor could make money, aside from the greater fool theory,” one financial analyst told Yahoo Finance.

In other words, retailers might be pumping the stock and hoping to get out before the dumping starts. This trading activity appears to have nothing to do with movies, streaming, or large red vending machines. Like other consumer-facing companies that tap into retail trader nostalgia—like GameStop, AMC, Bed Bath & Beyond, Blackberry, and even Blockbuster—Redbox is just another momentary Wall Street meme. At least this one has an expiration date when the deal closes.

Those attributes are all bad for, like, rational stock value, but good for memes:

Trading the dumbest meme stock is much funnier than trading the forty-sixth-dumbest meme stock. Redbox is a very funny meme stock! If you tell a traditional finance person “I am buying GameStop at $300,” they will say “hmm that seems high I dunno.” If you tell them “I am buying Redbox at $12.89” they will sputter and twitch and try to prove to you with math that it’s a mistake. That’s funnier!Having an expiration date makes this game more exciting and sillier. The problem with a regular meme stock is that eventually people will get bored; the finite expiration date here limits that risk. The game has to end, and when it does, someone will be holding quite a bag. It creates more immediate danger and excitement than a meme stock that could keep going up forever.Also to be fair once the deal closes you could aways meme up the Chicken Soup stock, why not.

The other lesson is that the essential condition of a meme stock is limits to arbitrage. Any reasonable person would look at this price action and say: “I should short 1 million shares of Redbox for $9.47, collecting $9.47 million; then I should buy 87,000 shares of Chicken Soup for $7.31, spending $636,000, and then when the merger happens I will deliver those Chicken Soup shares to close out my short and keep my $8.8 million of nearly risk-free profit.” But a sensible person would have said that back when Redbox was trading at $2.58 last month, and if they had done that trade then, it would have moved against them by millions of dollars by now and they probably would have been liquidated at a huge loss. Because there is no cap on the price of a meme stock, it is risky and unpleasant to short one, and there is at least one high-profile case of a multibillion-dollar hedge fund closing down due to excessive shorting of meme stocks. Why bother, on a stock this small? (Also, relatedly, stock borrow in Redbox is scarce and expensive, so it’s not exactly easy and costless to do this trade. Also, I mean, the merger could fall apart.) And so there are meme-y buyers to push Redbox up, and no rational sellers to push it down, and the price spirals up.

The advanced move here would be for Redbox to do an at-the-market offering, selling a bunch of shares for $9.47 each to raise extremely cheap cash for its soon-to-be owners at Chicken Soup. I think that would be a bit too much? Other meme stocks have done at-the-market offerings, and the US Securities and Exchange Commission has grumbled but allowed it. The SEC doesn’t like it when companies sell shares to excited retail investors for more than they’re worth, but it can’t really police that; worth is subjective, and you can’t prove that the shares are selling for more than they’re worth. Doing an at-the-market offering at $9.47 when you’ve signed a merger agreement to sell for $0.69 probably goes too far though.

Nevada Stock Promoter Admits Role In $33 Million Microcap Stock Manipulation Scheme

(Newsroom America) -- A Henderson, Nevada, man has admitted his role in a stock market manipulation scheme that artificially inflated the stock price of four publicly traded companies through manipulative trading and other fraudulent means.

Nathan Montgomery, 35, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose Linares in Newark federal court to an information charging him with conspiracy to commit securities fraud.

According to the documents filed in this case and statements made in court:

From 2008 through 2010, Montgomery, a penny stock promoter, participated in an extensive “pump-and-dump” scheme in which he and others fraudulently inflated the prices of certain shares in order to sell them later at artificially inflated prices. The scheme involved four public companies: BioNeutral Group Inc. (BONU), NXT Nutritionals Holdings Inc. (NXTH), Mesa Energy Holdings Inc. (MSEH), and Clear-Lite Holdings Inc. (CLRH) (collectively, the “Target Companies”).

As part of the scheme, Montgomery and others first obtained control over large blocks of the free trading shares of the Target Companies.

Next, Montgomery and others “pumped” the price of those shares by, among other things, engaging in manipulative trading of the stocks of the Target Companies and disseminating promotional materials encouraging others to purchase them.

After pumping the stocks, Montgomery and the other conspirators “dumped” them by selling large volumes of the Target Companies’ stock to victim investors. The target companies’ stock price would then drop, resulting in losses to the victims.

In order to fraudulently inflate the price and volume of the Target Companies’ stocks, Montgomery paid cash kickbacks to Donald Toomer, an investment advisor in Las Vegas, so that Toomer would purchase the Target Companies’ stock on behalf of his clients.

The purpose of those purchases was to, among other things, create the false appearance of market interest and demand in the stock; build trading volume that would be attractive to potential investors who would later receive promotional materials about the stock; and generate income to fund the promotional campaigns, including email blasts and newsletters, that occurred in the later phases of the scheme.

Additionally, Montgomery and other conspirators engaged in coordinated trading of the Target Companies’ stock using various brokerage accounts that they owned or controlled, including the accounts of friends, family and other third parties.

The scheme collectively generated approximately $33 million in illicit trading proceeds, of which Montgomery received approximately $20 million.

The conspiracy charge to which Montgomery pleaded guilty carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gain or loss from the offense. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 20, 2016.

On Dec. 15, 2015, Samuel DelPresto of Holmdel, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud for his role in the scheme. On Dec. 21, 2015, a federal grand jury returned a five-count indictment against Toomer charging him with conspiracy to commit securities fraud and investment adviser fraud and several counts of securities fraud and investment adviser fraud.

Americans Socially United, a super PAC that recently received nearly $50,000 from James Bond actor Daniel Craig, has submitted its first official campaign finance report to the Federal Election Commission.

And it’s a mess: The report from the group that claims to support presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders is riddled with anomalies and raises as many questions as it answers.

The filing by Americans Socially United — whose founder, Cary Lee Peterson, has a history of financial and legal problems and is a wanted man in Arizona — came nearly seven weeks after the mandatory report was due and a week after the Center for Public Integrity raised questions about the super PAC’s operations.

The money from Craig appears to have come at a critical time for Americans Socially United, as the super PAC’s new report states it ended June about $50,000 in the red.

The new report further indicates Americans Socially United had raised about $100,000 from its formation in February through the end of June, although the exact amount is unclear.

That’s because one section of the report lists the super PAC’s total receipts as about $91,000, while other figures indicate it collected about $114,000.

Americans Socially United also states in its report that it refunded a significant portion of the money it collected. But the exact amount is again unclear.

One section of the report states the super PAC refunded about $54,000 in total to donors. Yet another indicates that that number is higher — nearly $80,000 — including $50,000 from a foreign national identified as Alejandro Fernandez of La Paz and $25,000 from a second foreigner simply identified as Anthony Rice.

Only U.S. citizens and green card holders are allowed to donate to federal candidates and political committees.

The report includes the names of about 30 donors but failed to provide federally required information about their addresses, employers and occupations.

Other donations were returned because Peterson’s super PAC got the money by mistake. Some contributions were intended for Sanders’ official campaign, the filing indicates.

For decades he has swaggered through life conquering women, chain smoking and saving the world, untroubled by the sensitivities of the 21st century.

In a new book, however, James Bond will be getting a dose of modern morality, as author Anthony Horowitz reveals the tricks he used to drag the spy kicking and screaming into the era of political correctness.

Horowitz, the writer of new Bond novel Trigger Mortis, said he had worked carefully to preserve Ian Fleming’s original character and ensuring his 1950s attitudes remained in tact.

But he has introduced a cast of new characters to point out the error of his chauvinistic ways, including messages about smoking causing cancer, women who give him a run for his money, and an “outspoken” gay friend.

Horowitz, who has been given access to Fleming’s own notes to research his latest update, said he had inserted “little twists” to make the story work for modern readers.

"The book is true to the character and keeps him as fans would want him, which is as the original hard-bitten guy,” he said. “But then it always challenges and nudges and says ‘well wait a minute’."

Among the surprises for fans includes the return of Pussy Galore, who has moved in with Bond in London and spend the mornings squabbling in quite the opposite of domestic bliss.

It is the first time a Bond storyline has followed a Bond Girl forward, beyond the spy’s conquest and inevitable desertion.

Trigger Mortis sees the new couple living in 1957 Chelsea and irritating one another over their boiled eggs, with “an uneasy silence full of dark thoughts and words unsaid”.

On the challenges of making Bond work for modern readers, Horowitz said he had realised there was an issue with the original plot, in which Pussy Galore is a lesbian who is overcome with lust for Bond.

"One of the challenges of writing the book was that attitude that a heterosexual man can change a woman's life and make her go weak at the knees,” he told radio station RTE.

"That's something that would be challenged, I think, in the 21st century.

"So it's how do you square that circle? How do you remain true to the original creation and concept and yet at the same time not offend people in the 21st century?

"If you read Trigger Mortis, you'll see actually there is a little twist to the tale in that particular story which I think sort of pays him off for his slightly patronising attitude.”

Saying readers must remember Ian Fleming 's novels were "of their time", he added: "I think the answer is that in the book I remain true to every one of Bond's things.

"He does smoke cigarettes, he smokes many many cigarettes. But then what I do is I nudge him with a little reference to a newspaper article he happens to glance at which just reminds him that these things will give him cancer.

"With women, he has this sort of patronising carnal attitude with them which is absolutely accurate to the Bond of the books. But then by creating very strong women he is given quite a run for his money and his attitudes are challenged.

"I also gave him a very outspoken gay friend, who chides him and says 'come on Bond, you're living in the 20th century now not the Middle Ages.'”

Horowitz, creator of The House of Silk, Moriaty and the Alex Rider children’s series, added: “My first duty, my first responsibility was to be true to the original feel of the book, to be true to Ian Fleming: his creation, his world and his ideas.

"What I was trying to do was wrap myself in his mantle and write a book that would be worthy of him.”

Trigger Mortis was awarded four stars by the Telegraph, with reviewer Jake Kerridge saying Horowitz has “captured the spirit of Fleming more successfully” than any other author permitted to write the Bond continuation novels. It is on sale now.

And Smith, despite plagiarism problems this year with Tom Petty over “Stay with Me,” is the breakout star of the year. Just like Adele, he took the Grammy Awards. I don’t know why anyone thought Radiohead, which drones on on and on like an electric fan, would be singing a pop song for a pop movie. That was weird.

The new James Bond film will be the superspy’s most expensive outing yet and studio chiefs wanted to cut costs by using fewer trains in a dramatic fight scene, according to leaked emails.

Correspondence released by hackers suggested the anticipated budget for Spectre was at one point well over $300 million (£190m), which would see it become one of the costliest movies ever made.

The emails have not been confirmed as genuine but are part of a vast tranche of information released online by Guardians of the Peace, a hacking group many experts believe is linked to North Korea.

It has been targeting Sony Pictures Entertainment for the last two weeks.

The latest emails were first reported by CNN which has been reviewing thousands of leaked documents. According to the email exchanges Jonathan Glickman, president of MGM Studios, wrote: “There are expectations we must meet for the audience.

“Still, we must find further cuts. This is not about ’nickel and diming’ the production.”

Suggested cuts included reducing the number of train carriages in a fight scene from four to three, and dropping a planned ending in the rain to save on special effects.

Other suggestions included shooting a night scene, when the characters are supposed to be in a villa in Rome, in London.

It was also estimated that $6 million could be saved by using more footage of Mexico, which is giving financial incentives to film there.

The film, which begins shooting this week, is being distributed by Sony. In one email Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Amy Pascal reportedly wrote: “It’s insane and you know with no script this movie is gonna go overbudget.”

According to the emails the movie’s producers refused to cut the number of trains or film the villa scene in London.

In a further leaked email exchange, Sony Pictures Entertainment executives joked about US President Barack Obama’s race, according to reports.

Amy Pascal, co-chair of Sony Pictures Entertainment, reportedly asked top producer Scott Rudin what she should ask Mr Obama at a November 2013 fundraising breakfast.

Mr Rudin wrote: “Would he like to finance some movies.” Ms Pascal replied: “I doubt it. Should I ask him if he liked Django?” Mr Rudin responded: “12 Years [a Slave].” The pair then named other films starring black actors.

Sony Pictures had not replied to requests for comment on the authenticity of the leaks at time of writing.

(Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) has been awarded a contract valued at $2.1 billion to build 16 P-8A Poseidon long-range maritime spy planes for the U.S. Navy, the Pentagon announced on Tuesday.

The deal marks the first full-rate production contract for Boeing for the new planes, and follows a decision by Australia last week to buy eight P-8A planes for A$4 billion ($3.6 billion).

The aircraft, based on Boeing's 737-800 commercial airplane,

will replace the U.S. Navy's P-3 spy planes, which have been in service for more than 40 years.

The Navy uses the new P-8A planes for anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare and surveillance work. Overall, the Navy plans to purchase 117 P-8As to replace its P-3 fleet.

The new order, to be completed by April 2017, will bring the number of aircraft ordered to 53.

Boeing has delivered 13 P-8As to the Navy, which deployed its first patrol squadron to Kadena, Japan in December 2013 and has been conducting missions since then.

Boeing assembles the P-8A aircraft in the same facility where it builds all its 737 aircraft, modifying the aircraft while they are still in production, instead of taking a completed airliner and tearing it apart to make the military modifications.

Boeing officials say that strategy has helped them reduce the cost of the aircraft and keep the program on or ahead of schedule.

LONDON— Rolls-Royce Holdings RR.LN +0.41% PLC said on Wednesday that it has completed an agreement with Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT +0.78% worth up to $1 billion to deliver around 600 engines for Lockheed's C-130J Super Hercules military transport planes.

The engine agreement will service U.S. government and international contract requirements between 2014 and 2018, Rolls-Royce said.

Shares were up 0.66% at 1,213 pence just after midday.

Bond. James Bond. The suave spy who prefers his martinis "shaken, not stirred" has an alcohol problem, if you measure his consumption in the original Ian Fleming novels. If the fictional hero drank this much in real life, he'd have some real health issues.

It's no wonder James Bond prefers his martinis "shaken, not stirred." The man has such a severe drinking problem that he probably suffers from hand tremors that make stirring a cocktail — if not shooting a gun — impossible, say doctors who studied the fictional spy's drinking habits.

Bond also is at high risk for sexual dysfunction, liver damage, car crashes, stroke and early death, according to findings published Thursday in an annual compendium of quirky medical studies in the British journal BMJ.

The study was done largely in fun, researchers say, but it comes with a serious message: Heavy drinking and a high-functioning life of international espionage, womanizing and stunt driving don't mix.

The authors found that Bond, as depicted in 14 classic Ian Fleming novels, drinks more than four times the limit recommended for British men.

"There are people capable of drinking this amount," says co-author Patrick Davies, a physician at Nottingham University Hospitals. "But they are not capable of drinking that amount and still being able to defuse a nuclear bomb."

How much are we talking? In the United Kingdom, alcohol consumption is measured in units, with one unit equaling 8 grams of pure alcohol. No more than 21 units a week are recommended for men. Many alcoholic drinks contain multiple units, and Bond's favorite vodka martinis would contain about three, Davies says. Bond also drinks Champagne, red wine and sake, and seems to drink almost constantly when not imprisoned or otherwise indisposed.

Estimated total: 92 units a week. "It's a huge amount," Davies says. Someone who really drank that much would be "a significant alcoholic."

Bond's symptoms likely would include a tremor that "would be "catastrophic for his marksmanship," he adds.

The classic Bond books, from the 1950s and 1960s, and the ongoing series of Bond movies (which the study didn't scrutinize) have lots of pop culture company in glamorizing alcohol "without showing the consequences in the real world," says Caroline Knorr, parenting editor for the advocacy group Common Sense Media. Kids today, she says, see alcohol endorsements from celebrities in their Facebook feeds and see drunkenness played for entertainment on reality shows. At least, she says, the original Bond character is from an earlier time when the consequences were not so well known.

But those consequences did exist: Fleming, the author who created Bond, died of heart disease at age 56 after a life of heavy drinking and smoking, Davies says. "We think James Bond might have a similar life expectancy."

JOHANNESBURG — It was a lethal gadget right out of a James Bond movie: Remote-controlled gun barrels rigged behind the rear license plate of a car that spray bullets at an unsuspecting target.

But South African police say it was a possible attempt to kill Radovan Krejcir, a Czech fugitive who was sentenced in his country last year to 11 years in jail for tax fraud and has been linked to underworld figures in Johannesburg.

Krejcir emerged unscathed from Wednesday's episode, which peppered his bullet-proof Mercedes Benz with impact marks and shocked veteran observers of South Africa's organized crime who thought they had seen it all. The empty, parked vehicle where the weapon was hidden burst into flames after the shooting, possibly destroying evidence.

"All my life is like James Bond stuff," Krejcir said with a chuckle in an interview with Eyewitness News, a South African media outlet. "That's how I live my life."

And who might want to kill him? At first, Krejcir reportedly said he didn't know. Then he said that if he had any theories, he wasn't saying.

The episode was the one of the most outlandish chapters in the long saga of the underworld in Johannesburg, where turf battles over drugs, fraud schemes and other spoils sometimes turn deadly. Over the years, South Africans have been riveted by this fringe universe of hit men, corrupt cops, sleaze merchants and grisly murders.

No one, however, tried to take out another guy with something that Q, the hi-tech whiz in the British secret service of the Bond movies, would devise in his laboratory. The getup on the car outside Krejcir's gold and diamonds pawn shop evoked "Goldfinger," the Bond movie in which 007 drives an Aston Martin with gun barrels behind the front indicators.

Photographs of the stolen red VW Polo in Johannesburg show a dozen gun barrels, some of them melted or contorted by the fire that followed the shooting. It was an accurate effort. About 10 bullets hit the driver's window, but Krejcir was out of the vehicle at that point, talking on his phone.

Security consultant Rory Steyn said on Radio 702 that there could be "any number of motives" for the incident, whether it was an attack on Krejcir or even something that he set up himself to appear like an assassination attempt.

Krejcir told local media that he initially thought he was hearing fireworks. He speculated that someone knew he always parked in the same place, positioned the gun-fitted VW for the hit and then triggered it from a distance.

Sean Newman, co-author of a book about a murdered strip club owner, said he was in the area at the time and had a close look at the rigged vehicle. He suggested the skills and planning required for such a job may have come from abroad.

"It was definitely very sophisticated," he said. "My first impression was that this was not local."

Newman's book, "Lolly Jackson: When Fantasy Becomes Reality," traces the turbulent career of Jackson, owner of a chain of South African strip clubs called Teazers who was shot dead in a Johannesburg house near the international airport in 2010.

Cyprus-born George Louca was named as a suspect in the killing, and the Supreme Court in Cyprus last week turned down Louca's effort to avoid extradition from his home country to South Africa. No date has been set for his extradition.

Krejcir, an associate of Jackson and Louca, eluded a police raid on his Czech villa in 2005 and turned up in South Africa in 2007, where he has fought extradition attempts. While in South Africa, Krejcir was charged with robbery and insurance fraud in unrelated cases, but the charges were dropped.

In the book co-authored by Newman, Krejcir say he is a scapegoat for killings that police have been unable to solve. According to the book, he said he was one of the first people to see Jackson's body, and described the scene in detail, even suggesting how the killing may have happened.

"He's always come across as very respectful and charming in my presence. He's never threatened me," Newman said of Krejcir. "I've never seen him lose his temper. I'm sure others have."

“Skyfall,” the latest James Bond thriller from Sony Corp. (6758) and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., may set a record for the film franchise with receipts in the U.S. and Canada totaling as much as $80 million this weekend, Hollywood.com Box-Office said.

The film earned $30.8 million yesterday, including $2.4 million in midnight showings, the box-office tracker said today in an e-mailed statement. Sales outside the U.S. and Canada for “Skyfall” are $347 million as of Nov. 8, Hollywood.com said.

“Quantum of Solace,” released in November 2008, holds the record for the best-ever Bond opening with $67.5 million. That movie earned $27 million in Friday showings.

The latest film features Daniel Craig as the MI-6 operative Bond, Javier Bardem as the villain and Judi Dench as agency chief M.

Craig, who took over the role in 2006’s “Casino Royale,” has won critical praise in addition to box-office success. “Skyfall” had a 93 percent positive rating from critics, based on reviews, according to Rottentomatoes.com.

Daniel Craig has come forward to insist there will never be a gay James Bond - because 007 is not gay.

The actor, who takes on the role of the suave British agent in the latest installment Skyfall, was forced to comment after the chemistry between him and Javier Bardem's character Raoul Silva sparked speculation about Bond's sexuality.

The scene in question sees a flirtatious Raoul caress Bond's legs and chest as the spy sits tied up in a chair, with 007 ending the scene by asking his foe: 'What makes you think this is my first time?'

However, asked if he could ever imagine a gay James Bond, Craig replied: 'No'.

Asked to explain why not, the 44-year-old actor told E! Online: 'Because he's not gay. And I don't think Javier's character is either - I think he'd f**k anything.'

But Craig's co-star Naomie Harris, who plays Bond girl Eve in the new movie, is more open to the idea of a homosexual Bond.

She said: 'I think everything is open. Everything is open. Who knows?!'

And Naomie even went one step further when she suggested that Bond could even be played by a woman in a future film - as long as it's not her.

She said: 'That definitely would not be me, though. Just doing the little bit that I did in Skyfall was strenuous enough. I don't think that I'd be able to do that. But I could definitely see it happening.'

Naomie's comments come after she previously suggested that Idris Elba would be the perfect choice for the first black Bond.

Meanwhile, Craig opened up about how starring as Bond has changed his life in terms of financial security.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the cover of which shows the actor posing with co-stars Javier and Naomie as well as director Sam Mendes, Craig said: Obviously, financially I am pretty sound, and that is a wonderful thing; my family is secure.'

However, Craig, who is married to actress Rachel Weisz, added that he was entirely unprepared by the level of fame that comes with taking on such a well-loved role.

He said: 'It is very strange - you’ve got no point of reference for something like this. I’ve spoken to Pierce Brosnan, but nobody can warn you.

'I love the collaborative process of moviemaking. But going out for a cup of coffee? That’s the price you pay.'

Skyfall is in cinemas now.

James Bond may no longer be ordering his signature Martini, "shaken, not stirred." Reports say Bond is switching to Heineken.

Ad Age reports that Daniel Craig will reach for a Heineken rather than his trademark cocktail in a scene from the upcoming Bond movie "Skyfall," thanks to a deal Heineken USA has struck with the spy film franchise.

Craig will additionally star in a commercial for the brew to run globally, created by Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam with "Skyfall" director Sam Mendes serving as a consultant. Craig will also appear as Bond on special packaging for the beer.

James Bond will drink Heineken rather than martinis in the newest film.

Heineken USA chief marketing officer Lesya Lysyj told the trade paper: "[James Bond] is a perfect fit for us. [He is] the epitome of the man of the world."

While it's hard to imagine suave Bond as a beer swiller, Craig himself might be happy with the substitution. While filming "Casino Royale," he said of his usual cocktail, "I've tried about 10 of them. They're knockout ... I ended up on the floor."

Bond fans also got another piece of news about the upcoming film today.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Craig will appear as James Bond during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The showbiz trade reports that Craig will star in a short film called "The Arrival" to play during the games’ opening night. In the short, to be directed by Danny Boyle of "Slumdog Millionaire" fame, Bond will get his orders at Buckingham Palace then rush to a waiting helicopter. He will then parachute live into the Olympic Stadium.

The actor reportedly received an invitation to Buckingham Palace to shoot the film from Queen Elizabeth II herself, who’s rumored to be making a cameo in the film.

This years marks the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise.

DUBAI—Emirates Airline kicked off the Dubai Air Show on Sunday with the single largest commercial aircraft order in Boeing Co.'s history, snapping up 50 widebody 777-300s, as the Middle East's largest carrier continues with its aggressive expansion push.

The airline's chairman, Sheik Ahmad bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said the deal is valued at $18 billion and Dubai-based Emirates has options to purchase an additional 20 Boeing 777-300 jetliners. Delivery is set to take place in 2015, he added.

This year has seen Middle East-based carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways and Abu Dhabi's Etihad continue with their bold growth strategies by adding routes and bulking up their fleets.

If Emirates exercises options for an additional 20 777-300 extended-range planes, then Sunday's deal is valued at about $26 billion, Sheik Ahmad said, adding the airline was looking at a range of funding options including export credit agencies and Islamic financing to pay for the order.

Media reports in the past few days had speculated that Emirates could buy between 30 and 50 Boeing 777 long-range aircraft valued at $8.5 billion to $14.5 billion based on average Boeing list prices. The average list price of an extended-range Boeing 777-300, according to the company's website, is $298.3 million. The 777-300ER carries 365 passengers and can fly as many as 14,685 kilometers.

Emirates, which earlier in the month posted a 76% plunge in first-half net profit due to a $1 billion rise in fuel costs, now operates a fleet of 95 777s, making it Boeing's most profitable plane.

Sheik Ahmed said Sunday that despite continuing economic turbulence in Europe, the airline is poised for further expansion. U.S. and European airlines have often accused Persian Gulf carriers such as Emirates of receiving unfair government support including cheap fuel and other subsidies, which, they say, allows them to grow quicker.

"The growth will still be there," Sheik Ahmed said. He said the airline's commitment to the Airbus A350 XWB remained after Airbus parent European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. last week said it is taking a charge of €200 million ($275 million) to cover expected delays in delivering its new twin-jet aircraft.

Regarding the carrier's debt-raising plans, the Emirates chairman said all options are open.

"There's a lot of liquidity in the market," he said.

DOHA, Qatar—Boeing Co. called on cash-rich Middle East banks and investors Wednesday to help plug any potential financing shortfall of its aircraft as European banks reel from the region's sovereign debt crisis.

"The current European sovereign debt crisis, and its expected impacts on European banks, gives new impetus to aircraft investment opportunities for Middle East investors," Boeing said in a statement following its annual aircraft finance conference in the region.

Boeing stopped short of forecasting a gap in funding as the company and rival Airbus gear up production on their huge order books. Some European banks are pulling back from a role that has seen them account for around a fifth of commercial aircraft finance in recent years.

The company's latest guidance to investors envisages funding from commercial banks becoming more difficult to source—and more expensive—over the next two years.

Boeing said it is now worried about an "expected pullback" from these European lenders, as fears mount about their exposure to indebted countries in the euro zone.

This comes a day after Dubai-based Emirates Airline's president Tim Clark said that some French banks that have long helped fund its huge aircraft investment program are showing signs of retreating in the face of the region's sovereign debt crisis.

Emirates didn't identify the banks.

Recent speculation surrounding liquidity of French banks, including BNP Paribas SA and Société Générale SA—both big players in aircraft finance—has raised questions over their near-term role in the sector.

"I'm not unduly concerned," said Mr. Clark of Emirates's ability to finance dozens of widebody jets due for delivery over the next few years.

Many Gulf-based lenders are flush with cash after years of rising oil prices. Emirates and government-funded Qatar Airways are two of the fastest-growing airlines in the world.
