D R Horton builds single family, detached houses in 21 states. Over the last year, it has experienced accelerated earnings growth which, by all accounts, will continue for the foreseeable future. For example: June 97 EPS = .26 verses year ago .23 (13% increase) Sept 97 EPS = .34 verses year ago .29 (17% increase) Dec 97 EPS = .28 verses year ago .21 (33% increase) Mar 98 EPS = .31 verses year ago .20 (55% increase) Analysists are projecting an EPS for the quarter ending June 98 at .42, which is a wopping 62% increase over last year's EPS of .26! DHI confirmed in a recent article that it is "EXTREMELY" comfortable (emphasis in original) with its future earnings. In fact, DHI just reported that contracts for the most recent quarter were up 41% over the year ago quarter, and the value of those contracts were up over 50%. Yet DHI's PE is a very low 19 given its high earnings growth. (The total earnings for the fiscal year ending Sept. 1998 are estimated at 1.51, which would give a PE of just 15 at DHI's current price.) The home building sector is becoming very hot as a number of builders are showing blow out earnings in excess of expectations. The group relative strength has grown to 86%, and DHI looks to be adding to that trend. DHI has nearly no debt (unlike many other home builders). It has a float of 32.2 million, and 26% of those shares are owned by mutual funds. IBD currently gives DHI a RS rank of 88, and an EPS rank of 94. DHI's stock has been on a steady climb from a low of around 17 in late May to today's close of over 23. There likely will be some resistance at 24 due to prior overhead, but once DHI clears 24 it should have clear sailing. Also, short interest is at 17% days, which suggests there will be a short squeeze as the price continues to climb. Great news for longs! Earnings are expected July 21st. -- Jim

SI - D R Horton, Inc -- DHI
