It ended its first day at 55, up 4 3/8, with 3.3 million shares being traded. Charles Lee, former chairman and CEO of GTE, and Ivan Seidenberg, former chairman and CEO of Bell Atlantic, were on hand at the Big Board Monday to ring the opening bell as trading in Verizon shares began. The new company has more than 260,000 employees and is effectively the largest U.S. wireless company, at three times the size of its nearest rival, AT&T Wireless (AWE). It is also the world’s largest provider of print and online directory information. Vodafone (VOD) holds about a 45% interest in Verizon Wireless, a subsidiary of Verizon Communications.

SI - Verizon Communications (VZ)

[Ms. Baby Boomer] What is that Mr. Seidenberg ??? This number reflects a period of workforce reductions over several years, including significant job cuts announced in late 2025. The full-time employee count is consistently reported to be close to 100,000 across official and industry sources

Verizon workforce trends and recent layoffs details Verizon is undergoing its largest workforce restructuring in company history, with plans announced in November 2025 to cut roughly 15,000 jobs—about 15% of its workforce. These cuts follow years of gradual reduction and reflect mounting competition and slower subscriber growth in the telecommunications sector, especially against rivals like AT&T and T-Mobile.

?? Recent Layoffs and Restructuring The current wave of layoffs will affect a broad range of departments, including a notable reduction in non-union management and a possible significant cut (up to 25%) in the 5G enterprise segment.? Verizon will also convert around 180 of its corporate-owned retail locations into franchised stores to streamline operations and reduce overhead.? This restructuring is led by the new CEO, Dan Schulman, whose cost transformation strategy focuses on operational efficiency, margin stabilization, and enhanced shareholder returns.??

Workforce Trends 2020–2025 Verizon's workforce has fluctuated, with around 99,600 employees reported at the end of 2024.? Prior to these layoffs, there were signs of gradual contraction; for example, in mid-2025, Verizon had about 64,900 reported employees, reflecting an ongoing modest net reduction in staff.?

The competitive landscape and subscriber losses (notably, Verizon lost 7,000 postpaid phone subscribers in a recent fiscal quarter) have driven this additional push for cost reduction and workforce realignment.?? Industry Impact and Outlook Verizon’s aggressive downsizing mirrors broader industry trends, with telecom giants under pressure to invest in networks, pursue cost savings, and fend off both traditional and cable-based competitors.?

The company hopes these changes will boost profitability and shareholder value, but the full long-term impact on employee morale and customer experience remains uncertain.?

In summary, Verizon’s latest 15,000-job reduction marks a dramatic escalation in its ongoing workforce contraction, linked directly to new executive leadership and an urgent drive to cut costs amid tough competition.

[Ms. Baby Boomer] BLOOMBERG TV this morning ... 20,000 employees are being laid off at VERIZON .....

BLOOMBERG TV this morning ...

20,000 employees are being laid off at VERIZON ....

M

[Ms. Baby Boomer] IT ain't the Good Ol' Days anymore ... Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Why Verizon’s Surprise CEO Change Rattled the Wireless Industry

By Angela Palumbo Oct 07, 2025

The unexpected CEO transition is shaking up wireless stocks, and likely signaling increased competition ahead, Wall Street analysts warn.

Verizon appointed lead independent director Daniel Schulman as its new CEO on Monday, effective immediately. With this new transition, Verizon will focus on maximizing value propositions, reducing costs, and delivering sustainable long-term growth for shareholders, according to Monday’s news release. Other telecommunications companies might want to be on their guard, analysts say.

“The market is clearly worried about Verizon becoming more aggressive again in wireless to defend share,” Sam McHugh, head of telecom equity research at BNP Paribas, wrote on Monday night.

Both T-Mobile and AT&T stocks declined on Monday after the announcement. One concern for investors is that the changes at Verizon, if successful, may increase competition for fellow telecom companies. The sector’s shares, however, bounced back on Tuesday.

The managerial transition comes as investors have been looking for more from Verizon. Hans Vestberg started as CEO on Aug. 1, 2018. The stock had declined 15% from the close on July 31, 2018 to the close on Oct. 3, 2025, far underperforming the 12% rise of AT&T, the 285% increase of T-Mobile, and 138% jump of the S&P 500

“From the beginning of Hans’s tenure until now, Verizon has organically added about 5MM postpaid phones while the industry has added about 55MM postpaid phones,” New Street’s David Barden wrote Tuesday. “When Hans joined, Verizon was capturing over 20% of annual industry postpaid phone net adds; that share has fallen to an average of 5% over the last four years.”

Barden added that he believes Verizon’s statement Monday hints at possible major changes coming to the wireless carrier, including potential price cuts for consumers. Over the past few years, the company has raised its prices, leading to increased churn, or customers switching to less expensive plans.

“Greater focus on subscriber growth may impact growth at T-Mobile and AT&T while putting additional pressure on broadband sub trends at Comcast and Charter once Verizon’s convergence strategy is brought to bear,” UBS analyst John Hodulik wrote in a note Monday. He rates Verizon as Neutral with a $45 price target.

Shares of Verizon were up 0.8% to $41.78 on Tuesday. The stock has risen 4.5% this year, compared to the 14% increase of the S&P 500.

finance.yahoo.com

[Ms. Baby Boomer] My Zip Code has very high Property Taxes ... Attorneys for Headwater did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Tyler, Texas-based Headwater was founded by scientist and inventor Gregory Raleigh. Headwater said in its complaint in 2023 that its patented technology allows wireless devices to "reduce data usage and network congestion, extend battery life by decreasing power consumption, and enable users to stay connected."
Headwater said it shared information about its technology with Verizon under a non-disclosure agreement between 2009 and 2011. The complaint said that Verizon's mobile phones, tablets and cellular networks infringed Headwater's patents.
Verizon denied the allegations and argued that the patents were invalid.

[Ms. Baby Boomer] Verizon Communications Inc. .... finance.yahoo.com M

[nicewatch] Same thing but no worries, thank you. If I click on a link and it says set up an account, even to read for free, that's always a big turnoff for me, fwiw. There are the archive.ph style sites but lately I just copy and past the text myself if I really care to share it.

As for relevant VZ opinions as opposed to boomer's inane diary to herself... my original cellphone was a sprint plan a lifetime ago and then later rolled into VZ through a family company where it remains. That phone is ancient and needs to be updated but unlike most of my age and younger, I go out of my way NOT to live on my phone, I just want reliable service when I do have to use it and in my semi-rural area VZ has historically been the best.

The other month, I bought the latest and greatest Samsung Galaxy phone on a whim on sale. Instead of replacing my ancient VZ phone, also a Galaxy, I decided to get a new number and an annual prepaid plan from visible, a wholly owned subsidiary of VZ. So far it's mostly used as a wifi hotspot on the road but also works well otherwise. My point is the visible plan has been great so far and unsure if this cannibalizes even the regular VZ mobile subs? The caveat with Visisble is it's 99.9% online, not much human support if issues. For me that's not a problem. If an older relative, it might be. fwiw.

p.s. The other thing I haven't figured out is, if Visisble is using all of the VZ proper 5G radio bandwidths or turns some off to differentiate the service. I suppose that info is hidden away in footnotes somewhere but never delved into it.

[John Hayman] Sorry about that, I thought the link took you to the article.
