MAIDUGURI (Nigeria): Boko Haram Islamists have kidnapped more than 100 girls from a secondary school in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state, a senior security source told AFP.

Asked to confirm media reports that 200 girls had been taken from a school in the Chibok local government area during an Islamist attack, the source, who requested anonymity, said “the number is not up to 200, but it is over 100.”

“Many girls were abducted by the rampaging gunmen who stormed the school in a convoy of vehicles,” said Emmanuel Sam, an education official in the town of Chibok, where the attack took place on Monday.

On the night of April 16th over two hundred schoolgirls in the northern Nigerian town of Chibok were taken from their beds by armed gunmen. The girls, the majority of who were in their last two years of school and are between the ages of 16 and 18, were staying at a hostel on their school’s campus in order to complete their final exams. Schools in the region had been closes for around three weeks before this attack due to threats, but the girls were called back in order to complete their exams. Many of the schoolgirls also had to stay at the school over night as they lived in villages distant from Chibok and were sleeping when the militant group Boko Haram attacked both the school and surrounding area with bombs and gunfire. During the attack two of the guards assigned to the school were killed and around 230 of the girls were kidnapped and taken to an unknown location in the Sambisa forest.

Although the attack occurred over a week ago, the exact number of girls who have escaped remains unknown. The Nigerian military initially released a statement claiming that all but eight of the girls had been rescued, however the families of the missing girls as well as the school’s principle refuted this statement causing it to be retracted a day later. As of last Friday it appears that only 43 of the missing girls have been able to escape captivity, with many managing to slip away from their captors during the first night as they were hauled away in over-crowded trucks. Around ten girls were able to jump off a truck that broke down; others were able to race off into the forest and waited until daybreak to make it back home. However, the vast majority remains missing. The families of these girls, officials, and members of nearby communities have been searching through the forest, but Boko Haram camps are heavily armed and difficult to root out.

The group Boko Haram is a militant Islamist organization from the northern region of Nigeria. Almost twenty years ago there was a civil war between the northern part of Nigeria, which is largely Muslim and impoverished with southern Nigeria, whose population is primarily Christian and wealthier due to the oil industry. In addition, the education system in the north has broken down, as most schools in Nigeria require tuition and many families in the region cannot afford to send their children. As a result many young men are educated in religious schools called almajiri that do not require tuition, but many of these students can be coerced or persuaded to join militant groups such as Boko Haram. The name Boko Haram means “Western Education is Forbidden” in the local language of Hausu, and strongly opposes any type of non-religious education for boys and any education for girls. It was founded by a cleric named Mohammed Yusuf, who was killed in 2009, over a decade ago and its ultimate goal is to enforce a strict form of Sharia law in Nigeria.

Boko Haram is responsible for at least 1,500 deaths in Nigeria this year alone, and has made several bombing attacks on schools, not distinguishing between Christian or Muslim pupils, in the past. It also regularly kidnaps young women, who are used as forced labor in their camps and are frequently sexually assaulted. Many of the women are also forcibly married to members of Boko Haram, who often leave their previous families when moving to a new encampment. Hopes for the rescue of the girls continue, but as time passes it becomes increasingly difficult.

Why do some people think that acknowledging the suffering of others somehow diminishes their own? That in order to validate their suffering, they must deny the suffering of others?

Was the African slave trade a blight on the face of humanity? Was the African slave trade a horror that none of us can truly comprehend? Is there anyone at all who will argue that the answer is anything but a most emphatic yes?

Since that is so, why isn’t the Irish slave trade similarly acknowledged as even existing, let alone acknowledged as that same blight, that same horror? Why are the white slaves taken in Africa not likewise acknowledged as existing?

Why is acknowledging European slavery in Africa a threat to the memory of black slavery?

I’m not talking about racism, discrimination, civil rights issues. I’m not talking about comparing the suffering as if one can be found to be more worthy of notice.

I’m talking about slavery. Real slavery.

When the population of Ireland was cut by nearly two thirds within a single decade (1641 to 1652), with an estimated 300,000 Irish slaves shipped to the New World to work for English masters and another 500,000 killed outright, that is a reality of history. They were every bit as much slaves as the Africans brought to the Americas.

During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.

And don’t kid yourself. These were not indentured servants who labored for some years and then were set free. They were slaves. Every bit as much as the Africans were slaves. They were slaves who were sent to the Americas to labor and die by the master’s hand, to be seen as property and chattel, not people.

In time, the English thought of a better way to use these [Irish] women (in many cases, girls as young as 12) to increase their market share: The settlers began to breed Irish women and girls with African men to produce slaves with a distinct complexion. These new “mulatto” slaves brought a higher price than Irish livestock and, likewise, enabled the settlers to save money rather than purchase new African slaves.

Is it true that many descendents of slaves today have lighter complexions because their ancestors were raped by white masters? Undeniably. However, it is just as true that many are the descendents of slaves both white and black, that their lighter complexion is from an African slave father and an Irish slave mother, rather than a slave master. And the descendents of those slaves are as much descendents of their Irish mothers as they were of their African fathers.

When the Barbary pirates captured white slaves from Europe and took them back to Africa, they were every bit as much slaves as the Africans brought to the Americas, suffering under brutal conditions.

By extension, for the 250 years between 1530 and 1780, the figure could easily have been as high as 1,250,000 – this is only just over a tenth of the Africans taken as slaves to the Americas from 1500 to 1800, but a considerable figure nevertheless. White slaves in Barbary were generally from impoverished families, and had almost as little hope of buying back their freedom as the Africans taken to the Americas: most would end their days as slaves in North Africa, dying of starvation, disease, or maltreatment.

As per the above quote, the number was smaller than the African trade, but does that justify forgetting them? Does that justify pretending that there were no White slaves in Africa, taken by Africans? Does that justify pretending that there were no white slaves in the Americas?

Ignoring this piece of history does nothing to correct the injustices today. Ignoring this piece of history does nothing to ease the suffering of those who continue to suffer, so what is the goal of such willful ignorance?

The suffering of those today is not validated through denial of others suffering. It is validated through the suffering itself. Those feelings are their own validation, they need nothing more than that. To attempt to use ignorance of history as a validation for feelings can only serve to diminish that validation when history is illuminated.

There is no data, no statistic, no historical fact that can diminish the horror of the Africa slave trade. Why, then, is data and historical fact so quickly brushed under the carpet as if to acknowledge that the suffering in slavery was not one-sided somehow detracts from the suffering of Africans?

My ancestors were Irish. My people, too, suffered slavery, both at the hands of the English and at times the hands of the Africans. I won’t pretend that I have forgotten this history, and I won’t stay quiet when someone else tries to ignore it.

That does not mean I am pretending to understand the current discrimination that happens today. The Irish have been integrated into society in a way that blacks have not. They became “normalized” whereas blacks have not.

I learned about the African slave trade in school. But I never learned about the Irish slave trade. I never learned about the white slaves in Africa. These things were quietly ignored.

This has nothing to do with justifying racism. It has nothing to do with detracting from African suffering. It has nothing to do with telling someone to ‘get over it.’

I am not asking for anything beyond the simple acceptance of facts. I am not asking for pity, or sympathy, or empathy. I am not asking for anger, or guilt, or any emotion at all.

It has everything to do with acknowledging the reality of history. We can’t learn from history when we refuse to accept the whole of it. And accepting the whole of history in no way diminishes any one part of it. Tragedies are tragedies, there is little chance of having any major tragedy of history watered down through the knowledge of others.

Democratic state Sen. Elbert Guillory said Friday he is leaving “the party of disappointment” to join the ranks of Republicans.

With the move, the Opelousas conservative becomes the only black Republican in the Louisiana Legislature and the Republican delegation’s first black member.

Guillory made the announcement as he received the Frederick Douglass Award at a national conference of black conservative leaders in Baton Rouge. Douglass escaped from slavery and became a leader in the abolitionist movement in 19th century America.

Stephen Handwerk, executive director of the Louisiana State Democratic Party, called the party switch “a craven display of political opportunism.”

Handwerk called on Guillory to resign his Senate seat “since he has chosen to abandon the Democratic Party values that the voters elected him to represent.” He said Guillory is aligning himself with the party that has stood with Gov. Bobby Jindal’s “failed policies and against working families in Acadiana.” He said Louisiana Republicans have opposed equal pay for women and expansion of Medicaid to cover more of the state’s uninsured.

Guillory, a lawyer, has worked with Jindal on several issues, most prominently in efforts to revamp the state employee pension system.

“As of this day, I join Frederick Douglass as a Republican,” Guillory, 68, said as he wrapped up a speech blistering the Democratic Party. The move is a return to Republican Party registration for Guillory.

“Today the party of disappointment has moved away from the majority of Louisiana. They have moved away from traditional values of most Americans,”Guillory said in prepared remarks. “They have left us behind on crucial issues like abortion, vouchers, Second Amendment rights, union control of public jobs, school prayer, family issues.”

Guillory said the biggest disappointment for him has been the party’s role in the breakdown of families.

“Their support of dependency over self-reliance, of everything but traditional marriage, of abortion on demand, their policies have encouraged the high teen birth rates, high school drop out rates, high incarceration rates and very high unemployment rates,” Guillory said. “Our self-initiative and self-reliance are sacrificed in exchange for votes for the party of disappointment.”

“The list of disappointments is long,” Guillory said, noting “the lies and cover-up at Benghazi, the IRS harassing the tea party and wiretapping and spying on reporters.”

He decried federal Democratic initiatives to stop drilling after the BP disaster as well as efforts to “confiscate all guns.”

Guillory said under Republicans the black community has “gotten some pretty good deals.”

Among them, he said, are fighting for black rights during and after the Civil War, helping Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson pass the 1965 Civil Rights Act over the objection of most Southern Democrats, and Republican President Richard Nixon opening the doors to higher education and to government contracting for minorities.

The 39-member Senate now has a historic high of 25 Republicans. Senate and House delegation membership hits 83 legislators.

There were, he said, "two guys with what we know know is the victim, who was on the floor. We thought they were helping him."

He then said his partner let out an "almighty scream" and saw "big knives like that from a butchers". He stated there was "no samurai sword" but the attackers were "hacking at the poor guy [on the floor]" with a "meat cleaver".

One of the men is then reported to have pulled a gun from the car and told witnesses to get back in their cars. The eyewitness then told LBC Radio that the men were "chopping this guy to pieces, literally hacking at something like it was a piece of meat. These guys were animals. They then dragged the poor guy, he was obviously dead.... dragged him from the pavement an dumped his body in the middle of the road".

The men are then reported to have stood at the side of the road, waving a gun and knives about. Armed response units apparently took 20 minutes to arrive on the scene, and police "at the end of the road" did not respod to the event, according to the eyewitness, because they were not armed and able to deal with the incident.

How do you send a man, who's assigned mission by his Al Qaida leadership was to engage in a Martyrdom attack, thereby killing himself and blowing up a plane, back to "track" more bomb makers??
If I were the bombmaker, my first question is "why are you still alive?".. My second question would be "Where is the prototype bomb I gave you to conduct the attack?"

And the final question, before I sent him into the loving hands of my counter-intelligence and interrogation team.. "how long have you worked for the CIA?"

Therefore, this article, if correct, suggests that the informer was an expendable asset for both his Al Qaida handlers, as well we as the CIA, who's apparently mission imperative was to obtain that bomb for study.

To claim they were going to send him back in, and that the suggested AP leak prevented that, is illogical on it's face.

OBAMA DENIES ROLE IN GOVERNMENT

WASHINGTON ( The Borowitz Report)—President Obama used his weekly radio address on Saturday to reassure the American people that he has “played no role whatsoever” in the U.S. government over the past four years.

“Right now, many of you are angry at the government, and no one is angrier than I am,” he said. “Quite frankly, I am glad that I have had no involvement in such an organization.”

The President’s outrage only increased, he said, when he “recently became aware of a part of that government called the Department of Justice.”

“The more I learn about the activities of these individuals, the more certain I am that I would not want to be associated with them,” he said. “They sound like bad news.”

Men who are physically strong are more likely to take a right wing political stance, while weaker men are inclined to support the welfare state, according to a new study.

Researchers discovered political motivations may have evolutionary links to physical strength.

The principal investigators - psychological scientists Michael Bang Petersen, of Aarhus University in Denmark, and Daniel Sznycer, of the University of California in the U.S., believe that the link may reflect psychological traits that evolved in response to our early ancestral environments and continue to influence behaviour today.

Professor Petersen said: ‘While many think of politics as a modern phenomenon, it has - in a sense - always been with our species.’

In the days of our early ancestors, decisions about the distribution of resources were not made in courthouses or legislative offices, but through shows of strength.

With this in mind, Professor Petersen and Professor Sznycer hypothesised that upper-body strength - a proxy for the ability to physically defend or acquire resources - would predict men's opinions about the redistribution of wealth.

The researchers collected data on bicep size, socio-economic status, and support for economic redistribution from hundreds of people in the United States, Argentina and Denmark.

In line with their hypotheses, the data revealed that wealthy men with high upper-body strength were less likely to support redistribution, while less wealthy men of the same strength were more likely to support it.

Professor Petersen said: ‘Despite the fact that the United States, Denmark and Argentina have very different welfare systems, we still see that - at the psychological level - individuals reason about welfare redistribution in the same way.

‘In all three countries, physically strong males consistently pursue the self-interested position on redistribution.’

Men with low upper-body strength, on the other hand, were less likely to support their own self-interest.

Wealthy men of this group showed less resistance to redistribution, while poor men showed less support.

Professor Petersen said: ‘Our results demonstrate that physically weak males are more reluctant than physically strong males to assert their self-interest - just as if disputes over national policies were a matter of direct physical confrontation among small numbers of individuals, rather than abstract electoral dynamics among millions.’

However, the researchers found no link between upper-body strength and redistribution opinions among women.

Professor Petersen argued that this is likely due to the fact that, over the course of evolutionary history, women had less to gain, and also more to lose, from engaging in direct physical aggression.

He said, together, the results indicate that an evolutionary perspective may help to illuminate political motivations, at least those of men.

Professor Petersen added: ‘Many previous studies have shown that people's political views cannot be predicted by standard economic models.

‘This is among the first studies to show that political views may be rational in another sense, in that they're designed by natural selection to function in the conditions recurrent over human evolutionary history.’

The findings were published in the journal Psychological Science.

A BEDROCK principle of U.S. democracy is that the coercive powers of government are never used for partisan purpose. The law is blind to political viewpoint, and so are its enforcers, most especially the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service. Any violation of this principle threatens the trust and the voluntary cooperation of citizens upon which this democracy depends.So it was appalling to learn Friday that the IRS had improperly targeted conservative groups for scrutiny. It was almost as disturbing that President Obama and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew have not personally apologized to the American people and promised a full investigation.

In other words, 68 percent of the guns that were recovered were never submitted for tracing. And when you weed out the roughly 6,000 guns that could not be traced from the remaining 32 percent, it means 83 percent of the guns found at crime scenes in Mexico could not be traced to the U.S.

So, if not from the U.S., where do they come from? There are a variety of sources:

-- The Black Market. Mexico is a virtual arms bazaar, with fragmentation grenades from South Korea, AK-47s from China, and shoulder-fired rocket launchers from Spain, Israel and former Soviet bloc manufacturers.

-- Russian crime organizations. Interpol says Russian Mafia groups such as Poldolskaya and Moscow-based Solntsevskaya are actively trafficking drugs and arms in Mexico.

- South America. During the late 1990s, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) established a clandestine arms smuggling and drug trafficking partnership with the Tijuana cartel, according to the Federal Research Division report from the Library of Congress.

-- Asia. According to a 2006 Amnesty International Report, China has provided arms to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Chinese assault weapons and Korean explosives have been recovered in Mexico.

-- The Mexican Army. More than 150,000 soldiers deserted in the last six years, according to Mexican Congressman Robert Badillo. Many took their weapons with them, including the standard issue M-16 assault rifle made in Belgium.

-- Guatemala. U.S. intelligence agencies say traffickers move immigrants, stolen cars, guns and drugs, including most of America's cocaine, along the porous Mexican-Guatemalan border. On March 27, La Hora, a Guatemalan newspaper, reported that police seized 500 grenades and a load of AK-47s on the border. Police say the cache was transported by a Mexican drug cartel operating out of Ixcan, a border town.

'These Don't Come From El Paso'

Ed Head, a firearms instructor in Arizona who spent 24 years with the U.S. Border Patrol, recently displayed an array of weapons considered "assault rifles" that are similar to those recovered in Mexico, but are unavailable for sale in the U.S.

"These kinds of guns -- the auto versions of these guns -- they are not coming from El Paso," he said. "They are coming from other sources. They are brought in from Guatemala. They are brought in from places like China. They are being diverted from the military. But you don't get these guns from the U.S."

Some guns, he said, "are legitimately shipped to the government of Mexico, by Colt, for example, in the United States. They are approved by the U.S. government for use by the Mexican military service. The guns end up in Mexico that way -- the fully auto versions -- they are not smuggled in across the river."

Many of the fully automatic weapons that have been seized in Mexico cannot be found in the U.S., but they are not uncommon in the Third World.

The Mexican government said it has seized 2,239 grenades in the last two years -- but those grenades and the rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) are unavailable in U.S. gun shops. The ones used in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey in October and a TV station in January were made in South Korea. Almost 70 similar grenades were seized in February in the bottom of a truck entering Mexico from Guatemala.
