No, it’s not. Do they consider it? Many do. Are they buying? Many do. Do enough people buy? No, they don’t. We’ll continue to drive the awareness and build the consideration through yourselves, retail and call centres.

“We have driven the business, but is it enough? No, it’s not. We’re a big machine, we need big numbers and we’ll get them.

“We have a great portfolio, great partnership with Microsoft and a great start but that won’t make any difference unless we as individuals, and Nokia as a company, do something radically different. It’s about knowing what we need to do and doing it fast, but not recklessly.

Read more at Mobile News here.

[sense] I'll still choose "neither" or "none of the above" for my answer to the question...

I'll still choose "neither" or "none of the above" for my answer to the question posed in the list title...

NOK might be a buy at some point... or not... depending.

I'm watching it for hints re the dependencies, fundamentally, and for evidence of trading opportunities in the charts, but, neither the TA nor the fundamentals are giving me much that's useful for picking a bottom, now.

[sense] Marked. He told the Finnish broadcaster YLE that Nokia definitely has a contingency plan, though he stressed that there’s a lot of confidence in Windows Phone 8.

Does Risto detail what this “contingency plan” is? No, he doesn’t, which means everyone and their mother is going to publish an article postulating what’s going to happen at some point in 2013 if and when Windows Phone fails to break 5% smartphone market share. Speculating never hurt anyone, so let’s dish out our own predictions.

First, Nokia is going to sell their feature phone unit to a rising Chinese handset company. Said Chinese company will be free to use the Nokia brand for a limited time. IBM made the same sort of deal with Lenovo way back in 2004. Second, Nokia Siemens Networks is going to get acquired, probably by Ericsson. Third, we don’t think Microsoft is going to buy Nokia. Microsoft, with Surface, has shown the world that they frankly don’t give a damn about their hardware partners. Instead, Samsung is best positioned to buy Nokia, not just for their design skills, but also for their patents. How many Samsung products have been banned in the United States because of Apple? Exactly.

We’d like to remind you that Nokia posts their Q2 2012 financial results on July 19th. Expect to hear analysts try and squeeze out what this “plan B” is during the conference call. Nokia will fail to provide a definitive answer, but listening to them struggle to say something coherent is always the most fun part of the Q&A session.

[sylvester80] What moron CEO goes with no plan B??? (NASDAQ:BIDU) and QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM).

Even though the Finnish company trimmed part of last week’s gains yesterday, the stock still finished in the top five for the last five trading sessions.

Friday’s gains for the mobile-phone maker struggling to recover lost market share, were the best this month as shares advanced nearly 7% in heavy volume. The gains were led by speculation of acquisition interest from South Korean competitor Samsung Electronics, according to Reuters.

Analysts played down the likelihood of an offer from Samsung for Nokia, a company that has been quickly losing market share. Ovum analyst Nick Dillon said that Samsung is currently flying and it is difficult to observe what benefit it would gain from acquiring Nokia. Nick Dillon added that any benefit it would gain from Nokia’s patent collection or production plans would likely be outweighed by the complexities of integrating the two companies.

Ben Wood, the leading research analyst at CCS Insight, said he cannot find a rational reason why Samsung would want to takeover Nokia right now. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) which teamed up with Nokia for its new smartphones, has been seen as the most likely buyer.

Last year the stock sharply declined after a strategy shift in its smartphone business and this year shares fell as consumers snapped up Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones and smartphones running on Google Inc’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android software.

Nokia has lost as much as 70 billion euros or $87 billion in market value since Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, winning the top spot for smartphone innovation. Samsung Electronics Co. surpassed Nokia in the first quarter as the world’s biggest handset maker, according to Gartner Inc. Bo Nordberg, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity Ltd. in London, said that a lot of names have been cited as possible bidders, but it is not particularly convincing.

Last year, Nokia and Siemens AG ended discussions to sell their network-equipment joint venture, Nokia Siemens Networks, to private-equity buyers.

[sylvester80] Report: Nokia Maps replacing Bing Maps in all Windows Phone devices June 12,...

Report: Nokia Maps replacing Bing Maps in all Windows Phone devices
June 12, 2012 — 10:23am ET | By Jason Ankeny
fiercemobilecontent.com
Nokia ( NYSE:NOK) Maps will replace Microsoft's ( NASDAQ:MSFT) own Bing Maps in all devices running the software giant's Windows Phone mobile operating system, according to WPCentral.

Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Phone 8 will initiate the transition from Bing Maps to Nokia Maps, introducing features including 3D navigation and hardware acceleration, WPCentral reports. In February, Microsoft and Nokia announced a unified maps design for both the mobile and desktop versions of Bing and Nokia Maps, indicating designers from both companies collaborated to create a streamlined approach including improved contrast, colors and typography.

Nokia Maps services feature turn-by-turn directions, voice navigation tools and multiple map views like public transport and live traffic. Nokia Maps includes software and services acquired via deals for companies like navigation platform Navteq, 3D urban modeling software developer PixelActive and crowdsourced traffic alert solutions provider Trapster. Last July, Nokia integrated the Navteq unit into its new Location & Commerce business.

Microsoft is expected to unveil Windows Phone 8 during an event scheduled for June 20. WPCentral adds Windows Phone 8 will integrate Skype VoIP services and support for Near Field Communications-based contactless payments.

Nokia introduced its Windows Phone-based Lumia smartphone series in late 2011.
