Roku partners provide over-the-top content in the form of channels. The name comes from the Japanese word roku meaning "six" and was named so because it was the sixth company that Anthony Wood (CEO 2002-) started. A Roku streaming device gets data (the video stream) via a wired or Wi-Fi connection to an Internet router. The data is output via an audio cable, video cable, or HDMI cable. The device can be connected to any television set (or other video display device) with appropriate input connections. The Roku is an open-platform device with a freely available software development kit that enables anyone to create new channels. The channels are written in a Roku-specific language called BrightScript, a scripting language the company describes as 'unique', but "similar to Visual Basic" and "similar to JavaScript". Developers who wish to test their channels before a general release, or who wish to limit viewership, can create "private" channels that require a code be entered by the user in the account page of the Roku website. These private channels, which are not part of the official Roku Channel Store, are neither reviewed nor approved by Roku. There is an NDK (Native Developer Kit) available, though it has added restrictions. Roku shares have absolutely exploded in the last week, rising from $18.84 to $45.30 in the past five days alone, after having remained relatively calm since the IPO in late September. We have two ROKU boxes in our home, and a new television we bought a year ago even has the Roku service built in as an integral part of the tuner.

SI - Roku

[Ron] Roku is now in 100 million streaming households variety.com earnings are April ...

Roku is now in 100 million streaming households
variety.com

earnings are April 30

[zax] Roku plans to dramatically expand its advertiser base from 200 to 100,000 compan...

Roku plans to dramatically expand its advertiser base from 200 to 100,000 companies using generative AI tools, CFO Dan Jedda told investors at recent conferences. Report.

Business Insider reported Wednesday that Roku has recently closed the window during which employees can sell their vested stock grants, citing people familiar with the matter, and that talk inside the San Jose, California-based group has focused on a potential takeover bid from streaming giant Netflix.

While Netflix's balance sheet may be stressed by its planned $33 billion in content spending this year, as well as its 'junk grade' credit rating, an all-stock deal with Roku could allow the group to gain access to its ad-sales platform just as Netflix looks to transition away from its subscription-only model.

D.A. Davidson analyst Tom Forte said in a recent research not that Roku has "myriad" ways in which it can help Netflix thanks in part to its ability to "enable Netflix to target advertising on Roku's platform to try to get consumers to restart the service."

"For example, it could give Netflix the opportunity to showcase the first season of one its shows on The Roku Channel as a way of inspiring consumers to subscribe to Netflix to watch the remaining seasons," Forte said. The most recent brutal episode was a 22% plunge on Friday following the company’s fourth-quarter results. That drop put the shares back around their level from early 2020, before the pandemic sent people rushing home to their connected TVs, boosting Roku’s sales, adjusted earnings and stock price.

Roku’s last two quarterly reports have been the only times the company has missed Wall Street’s revenue projections since it went public in 2017. The most recent was the worst, with revenue of $865.3 million coming in about $20 million shy of the low end of the company’s own projected range. Roku says supply-chain disruptions have disrupted both the availability of its hardware—streaming boxes and connected TVs made by partners—as well as advertising in certain segments that are also affected by those shortages.

Those shortages aren’t expected to ease soon. Roku projected revenue growth of 25% year over year for the current quarter, which would be its slowest in nearly five years. Moreover, Roku expects to significantly increase spending this year to invest more in its business, which now includes the production of original content. As a result, the company projected adjusted pretax earnings for this year would be “roughly in line” with 2020’s level—a drop of about 70% from last year.

In a market that has turned brutal for richly valued tech companies, investing in growth over profits didn’t go down well.

“In essence, Roku is going to grow revenue at a slower than expected pace in combination with a massive ramp in expenses, into potentially a global economic slowdown with increasing levels of competition,” wrote Pivotal Research Group’s Jeff Wlodarczak, who downgraded Roku’s shares to a sell rating on Friday. Even more positive analysts were taken aback; Michael Pachter of Wedbush maintained his outperform rating but called the full-year earnings guidance “shocking” and predicted that the stock would “remain in the penalty box with investors for some time.”

Roku also has to contend with a market that has grown decidedly less friendly to streaming businesses. Netflix and Spotify both have lost more than one-third of their value just since the first of the year in part due to disappointing subscriber-growth projections. And Paramount Global —the company once known as ViacomCBS—has shed more than a fifth of its value just since its analyst meeting last week where the company sharply boosted its projected spending on streaming content for the next few years.

Roku ended 2021 with about 52% of connected TV users in the U.S. market, according to eMarketer. But competition is picking up. Roku’s share of device sales through Amazon.com, Best Buy, Target and Walmart fell by 7 percentage points in 2021 while Amazon’s share for its Fire TV products rose by 6 points, according to YipitData, which monitors streaming TV and device sales in the U.S.

And because Roku is such a sizable platform in its own right, it no longer has the benefit of being perceived as neutral ground in turf battles among much bigger tech giants; the company has lately had a few battles of its own with companies ranging from HBO Max-owner WarnerMedia and Google’s YouTube.

Such challenges come with the territory of having a commanding position in TV streaming. But growing pains were much easier to take when growth wasn’t so expensive.

Write to Dan Gallagher at dan.gallagher@wsj.com

Roku’s Island in the Stream Takes on Some Water - WSJ

[quantinvestor] Growth has been slowing for Roku as the market is becoming saturated. Since mid-March, the stock has experienced a robust turnaround from lows of below $60.00 per share to current levels of nearly $110.00 per share.

The streaming TV provider reported an estimated 39.8 million active accounts at the end of the first quarter, representing a net increase of 3 million over the prior quarter. The company also reported a 49% year-over-year increase in streaming hours to 13.2 billion during the first quarter, although a new "Are you still watching?" feature could reduce streaming hours in future quarters.

While operational growth remains strong, Roku withdrew its previous 2020 outlook, citing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak. The company expects some marketers to pause or reduce ad investments over the near term, resulting in a potential revenue hit. The company also drew down its credit facility to increase liquidity and ended the first quarter with an estimated $587 million in cash and equivalents.

... investopedia.com

[zax] Fox Buys Free Ad-Supported Streaming Service Tubi For $440 Million Tubi, a lea...

Fox Buys Free Ad-Supported Streaming Service Tubi For $440 Million

Tubi, a leader in the fast-growing free ad-supported streaming category, is being purchased by Fox for about $440 million. Deadline reports:

Tubi brings Fox an expanded consumer offering with a sizable, younger-skewing and directly connected user base that spends over 160 million hours per month watching content on the service. Fox plans to continue to run Tubi as an independent service and said it will evaluate opportunities to expand its offering -- not through original content but in a "more cost-effective manner by leveraging our expertise in national and local news and sports programming." Cost is the most important factor for choosing an SVOD for 84% of the respondents note Martin and Medina.

The time spent viewing the service is of crucial importance, according to the analysts. 42% of respondents were cited as willing to cancel an SVOD service because they weren’t using it enough.

... finance.yahoo.com

[zax] Roku earnings preview: Getting a first read on Disney and Apple’s impacts The ...

Roku earnings preview: Getting a first read on Disney and Apple’s impacts

The options market is looking for a 15.6% post-earnings swing, but that would be a smaller stock move than in recent quarters

marketwatch.com

Anthony Wood, founder and chief executive officer of Roku Inc.

Fresh off a carriage renegotiation with Fox Corp., Roku Inc. is about to face another test.

The streaming company is set to post December-quarter results on Thursday afternoon, with a report that will not only show how well Roku ROKU, +0.97% devices and connected TVs sold during the holidays but also provide some early indications of how Roku benefited from recent streaming launches by Walt Disney Co. DIS, +0.64% and Apple Inc. AAPL, +0.94% , both of which debuted services in November.

Roku shares surged more than 300% in 2019, in part due to enthusiasm around new streaming offerings from some of the larger players in tech and media. When users subscribe to one of these paid offerings through the Roku platform, the company takes a cut of the monthly fee, so bulls argued that Roku could ride the rising tide. “The significant expansion of streaming options in Q4, including Apple+ and Disney+, drove increased cord-cutting in the quarter, which may have accelerated active account growth on the Roku platform in Q4 in excess of our estimates,” wrote Wedbush’s Michael Pachter, who has a neutral rating and $105 price target on the shares due to concerns about valuation.

The stock had a more muted start to this year, but it has been subject to a wave of enthusiasm in the immediate lead up to the earnings report. Shares have added about 10% so far this week and are now in positive territory for 2020.

Here’s what to watch for in Roku’s upcoming report.

What to expect Earnings: Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect that Roku lost 13 cents a share in the fourth quarter, whereas the company posted positive earnings per share of 5 cents in the year-earlier period. According to Estimize, which crowdsources projections from hedge funds, academics and others, the average estimate calls for a 14-cent loss per share.

On an adjusted basis, analysts are calling for a loss of 7 cents a share. Roku recorded 5 cents in adjusted EPS a year prior.

Revenue: The FactSet consensus models $392 million in fourth-quarter revenue for Roku, up from $276 million a year earlier. The Estimize consensus calls for $396 million.

Stock movement: Roku’s stock is priced for a big move, but not as extreme as in the past. The options market is looking for a 15.6% swing in Roku shares in the day after the report, which would mark the second-smallest post-earnings move for the stock on a percentage basis. The average of the last six post-earnings swings is 22.3%.

</snip> Read the rest here: marketwatch.com

[zax] Roku, Inc. Up next: cheap phones

TCL's Roku partnership helped the company grow fast, but its margins remain thin.

After capturing the U.S. television market with aggressively priced Roku TVs, China's TCL wants to replicate that success with inexpensive phones, IoT devices and connected appliances — and in the process, turn its still relatively unknown brand into a household name.

In other words: TCL wants to be the next Samsung.

It won't be easy. The phone market, TCL's next target, is firmly dominated by Apple and Samsung and hard to penetrate for newcomers. The company also faces headwinds from the Trump administration's ongoing trade war with China, as well as political resistance to fellow Chinese tech companies like Huawei. And while TCL's partnership with Roku has been key to building its U.S. TV business, it has also forced the company to operate with razor-thin margins as Roku cashes in on a rapidly growing advertising business that's been a newfound source of revenue for other TV manufacturers.

... protocol.com

[Ron] Roku begins streaming operations in Brazil.
