Off Topic --- I've been involved in various projects ... occasionally "lurked"... invested...researched.

Walgreens Boots Alliance announced Thursday that it is suspending its practice of paying cash dividends to stockholders — the first time it won’t pay a quarterly dividend in 92 years.

The change comes amid struggles for the Deerfield-based retail pharmacy giant. Walgreens announced plans in October to shutter 1,200 stores over the next three years, including in Chicago. Walgreens has been cutting costs for years, including through layoffs in Illinois and other locations.

Walgreens said in a news release Thursday that it was suspending quarterly dividends “as management continues to evaluate and refine its capital allocation policy consistent with the company’s broader long-term turnaround efforts.”

Before now, Walgreens Boots Alliance and its predecessor company, Walgreen Co., had paid quarterly dividends to stockholders for 368 consecutive quarters, or 92 years.

The change is aimed at improving Walgreens’ finances by reducing debt over time and improving cash flow, Walgreens said in the release. “The company’s cash needs over the next several years, including with respect to litigation and debt refinancing, were important considerations as part of the decision to suspend the dividend,” Walgreens said in the release.

Walgreens had a net loss of $265 million in the first quarter of this year, compared with a net loss of $67 million during the same quarter the previous year.

Under previous CEOs, Walgreens had aimed to become more of a health care destination, including by investing billions of dollars into primary care provider VillageMD with plans to put Village Medical clinics in 1,000 of its stores by 2027. Walgreens, however, has reversed course on that plan, saying in an August filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it was considering selling all or part of its VillageMD business. Current CEO Tim Wentworth has said that Walgreens wants to refocus on being a “retail-pharmacy-led company.”

Walgreens has also struggled for years with issues related to medication reimbursement and changing consumer habits, among other challenges.

Though the company had a net loss in its most recent quarter, some of the operating loss was related to the costs of store closures, and sales increased 7.5% in the quarter compared with the same quarter in the previous year.

“While our turnaround will take time, our early progress reinforces our belief in a sustainable, retail pharmacy-led operating model,” Wentworth said in a news release about earnings earlier this month.

It’s no surprise that Walgreens chose to suspend its dividend as a way to free up cash, pay down debt and focus on fixing its operations, wrote John Boylan, a senior equity analyst for Edward Jones, in a note to investors Thursday.

“We view this as a prudent step to improve its cash flow and financial structure,” Jones wrote in the note. “Overall, we believe management’s turnaround strategy appears sound, but it will take time to unfold and is not without risk in a highly competitive drugstore industry.”

That is $8.80 in diidend payouts for the year. At the current share price that is a yield of 6.4% when combining the regular and the special dividends.

Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN) -8.3% in Wednesday's trading after the company's Q3 earnings beat is overshadowed by a dividend cut that apparently surprised investors.Devon ( DVN) announced after Tuesday's close it will pay out $1.35/share, down from $1.55/share previously, which still equates to an annualized dividend yield of 7%.Rather than the dividend drop, analysts are pointing to the company's disappointing Q4 guidance, which estimates Q4 capital spending of $845M-$915M, far higher than $768M analyst consensus.

Some accounts are reinvested. Other accounts the dividends are being harvested for living expenses. I love it when a plan comes together.

A coalition including major utility companies Dominion Energy (NYSE: D), Duke Energy ( DUK), PPL Corp.'s ( PPL) Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities subsidiaries, Southern Company ( SO) and the TennesseeValley Authority unveiled plans Tuesday to pursue federal financial support for a hydrogen hub in the southeast U.S.

The newly formed coalition said it will respond to a recent funding opportunity from the U.S. Department of Energy, which includes $8B for regional hydrogen hubs.

"Hydrogen may be poised to play a major role in addressing climate change and could be essential for each coalition member to meet its stated carbon reduction goals," the group said.

With shares offering a 4% yield and 6% dividend growth, Dominion ( D) is "an attractive stock for dividend growth investors," Seeking Profits writes in an analysis published recently on Seeking Alpha.

Just remember that a foreign tax (Ireland) will be withheld. You can claim a refund for the withholding tax but you will need to file IRS form. Fortunately in my case I only had 20 shares and had $3.15 with held so I just sold the stock and lost the few dollars that were withheld. I wasn't planning on filing a bunch of forms.

I am going start a position in MDT next month.

Let us look at its 4 Pillars for MDT (remember those?)

Dividend Safety - at 99 it is at the top of the Safety scale.
Dividend yield - 3.13%
Five year DGR - 8%
Valuation - probably undervalued - 5 year average yield, 2.18%, current yield of 3,13 is 44% above that. Current forward P/E is 15.3, five year average is 18.5.

It hits the criteria on all 4 of those. There are questions both about their diabetes products and their plan to spin off some things. I have decided to trust management to deal with both of those compentently.

It is going to be a slow build starting out, using only accumulated dividends to start and build the position. I could choose, at some point in the next year, to trim a couple of positions and build MDT more rapidly. At this point, I do not know.

September is one of our largest portfolio income months. Next week we will get about half of our month's income.

Pretty sure I will be buying some more SCHD. Right now the yield point is 3.65%. With a 5 year DGR of 12%, it is worth looking at IF you have considered it and have some cash available.

It looks like a pretty good deal -- you get NEOG shares at a 7% discount to market. You might be able to tender your shares and immediately sell for a profit? But life is never that simple...

If it is truly a good deal, then you would expect institutional shareholders to tender their shares. And if the bulk of the outstanding MMM shares are tendered, only 3% will actually be accepted/converted.

Alternatively, institutional shareholders may know from experience that the selling activity following the conversion will depress NEOG shares for a time -- making it less of a good deal than it first appears.

If I wanted to own/hold NEOG, then I would tender my MMM shares and see how it unfolds. In this case I have no interest in NEOG and thus will let others roll the dice.

PAUL, Minn., Aug. 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- 3M Company ("3M") (NYSE: MMM) announced today the commencement of an exchange offer to effect the separation of its food safety business (the "Food Safety Business"), in furtherance of the previously announced Reverse Morris Trust transaction with Neogen Corporation ("Neogen") (NASDAQ: NEOG) through the merger of Garden SpinCo Corporation ("SpinCo"), currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of 3M formed to hold the Food Safety Business, with a subsidiary of Neogen (the "Merger").

Tuesday I will be buying, following my plan of using those payments from high yielders to add to mid-yield, fast dividend growers. Not sure yet what I am going to purchase, but the candidates in our portfolios are: GLW, AMGN, SCHD, and TROW.

Not planning on venturing outside of current holdings at this time.

No point in waiting on this, my activity is this sphere is over for the week.

Dividends received: STOR, O and PBA

Shares bought: SCHD and GLW

My pattern of receiving dividends from higher yielders and putting the funds into mid-yield fast or very fast dividend growers continues. It is working in increasing dividend growth and dividend income.

Next Thursday, Friday and the following Monday the dividend spigot reopens. August is one of our slowest dividend months, but there will still be dividends to reinvest around the first and the middle of the month.

This Week in Ron's Dividend World

I received a dividend from TU this week. That is it.

I combined it with some accumulated dividends and bought some SCHD and GLW this week.

Next week I will get some dividends on Friday. One of them is from a Canadian company (PBA), so it will not show up in the account until the market close, so I may wait until the following Monday to combine it with O and STOR and do a little buying on Monday,

In the meantime, when I take dividends received through June 30 and add to that the SSD estimates for dividends I will receive in the second half of the year (those are based on share counts and current dividend rates), I will have real close to a 14% increase in portfolio dividend/distribution income in 2022.

That includes dividend reinvestment and three special dividends in the first half of the year. There may be another one or two special dividends from EOG in the second half of the year, but the possibility of those is not included in the 14%.

I will take it.

Not 45, but 58 (a little earlier than planned, when the accountants said "fire all the consultants!"). Having been prepared, I chose not to look that hard for work. DGI investing has worked out very well for us, and my wife has been able to delay SS until age 70, which will give a nice added boost this month.

If I were still depending on finding the winners in the market, or day/swing trading for income I could be doing better, but sleep well at night with the monthly income pretty much guaranteed. I should note that I sell covered calls for extra income as well, probably close to dividend income, and it keeps me busy & engaged in the market.

Do you think that perhaps you would have changed your investments style or choices to put you in a better position to handle the inflation issue? I primarily use dividends as my income. Generally speaking, they keep up well with inflation, excluding the current mess we are in lol.

I first retired at 40.

2 things I didn't give enough thought to 1 - All my friends were still working, so I didn't have anyone to play with. The second thing I didn't give enough thought to was inflation.

So I started another business and retired again in 18 years.

Early retirement

Wondering if anyone retired or is about to retire "young", i.e. 45 or so? Any surprises? Things you didn't anticipate or wish you had known earlier or done better? I was retiring at the end of this year (will be 45 in September) but someone reached out with a really great job offer so I took it. I imagine I will only be another 12 to 18 months, so the plan is delayed just a little bit. Was looking to see if others had any thoughts about their own experiences.

The week in Ron's Dividend Land

It was a pretty busy one. Let me get out my notes:

Dividends received from: SCHD, GILD, AMGN, EOG (a special, the regular comes in July) ETO, PEP, UTH, UGI, PTY and DLR.

Adds were made to AMGN, TU, TROW, GLW and SCHD.

I will point out that AMGN, TROW, and GLW are three of the mid-yield, fast dividend growth companies that I opened position in earler this year or late last year.

TU I have held longer. I purchased it by selling BCE and using the proceeds to buy TU, which had a much higher dividend safety score (Just barely above the Unsafe Range for BCE (42) and over the middle of the Safe Range for TU (72)). Improved the portfolio quality with that move.

SCHD I have written about earlier. With this dip into bear market territory, I liked its price better and have started adding to it recently.

Things slow down in July, and then even more in August.

We are at a first half all time high in dividends, in part due to special dividends.

The week in Ron's dividend land
Received dividends from AMGN, JNJ and our last one from SO.

Remember SO, I sold it and replaced it with EVRG? Will also get our first divvy from EVRG this month, doubling up on divvies earned by that chunk of money.

Put accumulated divvies into TU this week, so we once again have a record amount of dividends over the next 12 months. That is how easy this stuff works.

Next week we have O and PBA, both monthly payers, hitting the accounts. Kind of a slow week, but then the next two weeks accelerate a lot. Will have to watch the market to see where we are going to put those dividends.

We reinvest accumulated dividends in up, down and flat markets, and plan to continue doing so.

Now for my favorite post each week

Ron's Dividend Land this week, AKA all is well on the southern front.

I received some dividends from : WEC, PTY, ENB, and UTG. Except for WEC, these are some of my high yield positions.

I bought some shares of: EOG and RY. This is an example of using dividends/distributions from higher yield/lower dividend growth positions and using them to purchase mid-yield/faster dividend growth companies.

I know if you look at EOG, the current yield is about 2.1%, but, excluded from that number are 3 special dividends declared or paid in the the last 6 months, which exceeds the regular dividends ($4.80 v 2.25 respectfully).

So, of course, that increases our dividend/distribution flows once again.

Fourteen more dividends coming in this month. I am sure I will be putting them to work and writing about it here.
