has been withdrawn.

In a stunning development, Food and Chemical Toxicology, which last year published the controversial rat study by Gilles-Éric Séralini that claimed to show that genetically modified corn could lead to a high incidence of cancer will be retracted and evidence of it expunged from the journal’s database.

The editor of the journal, A. Wallace Hayes, sent the French scientist a letter saying that the paper will be withdrawn if he does not agree to do it voluntarily. According to Le Figaro, which broke the story, Séralini rejected Hayes’ findings.

Excellent news: when it first came out I was highly critical of it. And prompted by a commenter here I was able to show that the paper must be wrong.

The argument was quite simple. Seralini was claiming that lab chow made with Roundup Ready corn was causing these tumours in the lab rats. We’d certainly like to know if that were true. However, I went and contacted the maker of the lab chow that was used in the experiment. And, indeed, the lab chow that is used extensively across both the US and Europe.

And that company does not keep GMOs, including Roundup Ready corn, out of its supply chain. Well, not deliberately it doesn’t. However, there is a natural experiment here. For their European lab chow is made from locally grown, European ingredients. And there’s very little GMO or Roundup Ready corn in Europe. But of course it is entirely pervasive right through the American supply chain. So, if it were true that Roundup Ready corn produced tumours in these lab rats then we should have seen an explosion of such tumours in US lab rats and a much lower level of them in Europe (for this breed of rat is known to get these tumours anyway). But we haven’t seen such an explosion therefore we must assume that the paper itself is wrong.

In essence, between the EU and US populations of this breed of rat, we’ve been carrying out exactly the same experiment for the last decade or more, through several generations of rats used for all sorts of other experiments. And given that we haven’t seen an explosive change in cancer rates in those two populations then the original thesis must be wrong.

forbes.com

[longnshort] like the thug Obama Cancer Patient Tells the Truth About Losing His Insurance, ...

like the thug Obama

Cancer Patient Tells the Truth About Losing His Insurance, And Then Gets Audited: Bill Elliot came forward wit 8 victorygirls

[TimF] Hi Tim, you fail to make the distinction between "being left" and "doing whateve...

Hi Tim, you fail to make the distinction between "being left" and "doing whatever your financiers tell you to do."

Its not a very relevant distinction here. Even if the press just did whatever financiers said, and financiers had some consistent non-left or anti-left agenda, and they imposed that agenda most of the time on the press (and that combination is not true), then my statement would be wrong (which it isn't) but it still wouldn't be a matter of drawing a distinction between those two things.

Lenin wasn't communist, either. There is explicitly conservative media, and there is explicitly liberal media, as well as media supporting other ideas. But subtract out all the media that openly supports one a certain political group or ideology or party, and what's left leans to the left.

As for outbidding, big government (sometimes allied with people you would call "big capital" sometimes not) can outbid anyone (and also enforce its will without having to bid, it makes laws, and has prisons and guns).<<

Hi Tim, you fail to make the distinction between "being left" and "doing whatever your financiers tell you to do."

The financiers, I assure, you, are not "left" anymore than a wolf in sheep's clothing is a sheep.

Hitler wasn't socialist, even though he led the National Socialist German Workers' Party. Oh, he didn't give a chit about the workers, either. He was an authoritarian thug.

Lenin wasn't communist, either. He was an authoritarian thug who PRETENDED to be communist and socialist and for the "little guy." If you haven't, read Gulag Archipelago.

I could go on and on. Obama isn't "left," he's a front man for financial authoritarian fascists. A truly left media would call that piece of trash out as working on behalf of international bankers to loot America raw - including the poor folks and the middle class.

That's what I mean. However, my mind share is no longer circumscribed by the false narratives put out by these financiers through their schooling system and their media. Those still on the Big Finance Capital cognitive "plantation" will not be able to comprehend a word I'm saying.

[Skeeter Bug] Hi Bilow, Aldous Huxley's goal was to make the people love their servitude... ...

Hi Bilow,

Aldous Huxley's goal was to make the people love their servitude...

“A really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which the all-powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude.”
? Aldous Huxley, Brave New World

Go ahead, feed the little ones pesticide and herbicide delivery macronutrients.

Go ahead, let Monsanto patent and claim ownership to the food supply.

If you like the way the mega banks treat you with their monopoly money, wait until their corporate fronts gets a monopoly on food.

Your children will find out what happens when bugs have nothing to eat, too.

Because you are so powerful and smart because the establishment pats and rubs your little head.

All the while the richest people on the planet avoid their plans for the plebs.

You mock homeopathic medicine, but the creator of allopathic medicine rejected it for himself. John D. Rockefeller chose homeopathic medicine for himself, which schooling allopathic doctors to mock his preferred choice of health care. Why would be do that if not to deprive you of what benefited one of the richest person on the planet.

He couldn't point a gun at you and prevent you from using what he believed to be the best health care for himself, so he root kitted your schooling so no gun was required.

David de Rothschild is a naturopathic physician. An heir to one of the, if not the richest, families on Earth and owner in many Big Pharma companies (like Rockefeller interests), rejects what the serfs are sold.

And people like you, who don't know much about it, feel safe and comfy touting the establishment party line.

If these goons showed up to feed your children pesticide and herbicide, even you would know enough to fight back - well, if the media they financed made it trendy and cool, maybe you couldn't resist.

Most would, though. So the trick is to get you to feel all righteous while feeding your children pesticide and herbicide on their behalf.

That's the Ultimate Revolution....
youtube.com

BTW, David de Rothschild, in addition to being a naturopathic doctor, is invested in a large organic farm.

But you, the peasant class, will not get the same food or health care as the oligarchs... and instead of being smart enough to know you are getting rooked like peasants of old, you've been duped into thinking you are getting some kind of "deal."

"Scientific societies are as yet in their infancy. . . . It is to be expected that advances in physiology and psychology will give governments much more control over individual mentality than they now have even in totalitarian countries. Fitche laid it down that education should aim at destroying free will, so that, after pupils have left school, they shall be incapable, throughout the rest of their lives, of thinking or acting otherwise than as their schoolmasters would have wished. . . . Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible. . . .”----Bertrand Russell,1953 "Education in a scientific society may, I think, be best conceived after the analogy of the education provided by the Jesuits. The Jesuits provided one sort of education for the boys who were to become ordinary men of the world, and another for those who were to become members of the Society of Jesus. In like manner, the scientific rulers will provide one kind of education for ordinary men and women, and another for those who are to become holders of scientific power. Ordinary men and women will be expected to be docile, industrious, punctual, thoughtless, and contented. Of these qualities probably contentment will be considered the most important. In order to produce it, all the researches of psycho-analysis, behaviourism, and biochemistry will be brought into play." -----Read the book online here...[part 3, XIV, Education in a Scientific Society p.251]

"Education should aim at destroying free will so that after pupils are thus schooled they will be incapable throughout the rest of their lives of thinking or acting otherwise than as their school masters would have wished ... The social psychologist of the future will have a number of classes of school children on whom they will try different methods of producing an unshakable conviction that snow is black. When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for more than one generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen." -----Bertrand Russell quoting Johann Gottlieb Fichte, the head of philosophy & psychology who influenced Hegel and others – Prussian University in Berlin, 1810

"You can ignore reality, but you can't ignore the consequences of ignoring reality"
~!Ayn Rand

Consequences are a b*.

[Skeeter Bug] Big Finance Capital maximizes profits by promoting chronic disease through finan...

Big Finance Capital maximizes profits by promoting chronic disease through financed "profit maximizing" dietary "recommendations."

Big Pharma maximizes profits via a chronically ill society.

Big Pharma finances and controls medical schooling (not education, schooling, BIG difference) to maximize the profits of Big Pharma - that's their singular corporate mandate, BTW.

They will NOT tell you how to be healthy and will, in fact, mock methods of true health in order to appeal to authority perception manage your thought process.

For example, John D. Rockefeller created, financed and profited from allopathic medicine.

However, John D. Rockefeller REJECTED allopathic medicine for himself. One of the richest men on the planet REJECTED his own creation and, instead chose homeopathic medicine.

What did the creator of you medical system know that you don't?

JP Morgan said "Every man has two reasons for doing something, the good reason and the real reason."

Why did Rockefeller create and finance a medical system he rejected and then teach the allopathic physicians to mock and laugh at the very medical system Rockefeller chose for himself? He lived to be 100 years old.

Guess what? David de Rothschild, an heir to one of the world's largest fortunes, if not the largest fortune, chose to be a naturopathic doctor. The wealthiest people on the planet, the very people who own and control the allopathic medical system, reject it and chose homeopathy and naturopathy.

What do they know that you don't? They obviously take their health seriously and their outcomes are much better than average. They have access to the best researchers on planet Earth. Their corporate fronts directly employ perhaps most of them.

One reason could be that they know how to be healthy, but they don't want you to know how to be healthy so they can fulfill their corporate mandate at the expense of your schooled in ignorance. The doctors would have to be compartmentalized and duped, too, or else the cat would be out of the bag, as it were.

It is true that if you can get a person to mock something, it is rare for them ever to change their mind even when presented with overwhelming evidence - so teaching the allopaths to mock the very medical systems used by the dElites would be an effective programming mechanism to keep them from actually researching the preferred method of dElite wellness.

But, alas, it takes freedom to think through a problem, and not simply stimulus response, to be able think through issues like this.

wikipedia John D. Rockefeller and David de Rothschild to verify the claims contained herein.

Also note that David de Rothschild bought and runs a large organic farm.

What does he know that you don't?

[Skeeter Bug] longshort, don't be a low information tool. They depend on that.

"Literacy is simply another form of slavery until you invoke critical thinking."

Throw off the chains. Analyze the study itself, gather the grammar (data) yourself and reach your own conclusion based on sound logic.

Omega-3 fatty acids and prostate cancer? That generous $8,700 in disability comes thanks to Jackson’s sudden development of a “mood disorder” as the federal government began looking to indict him. Jackson, who was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, had no history of mental illness during his prior 17 years in Congress. Rev. Jesse Jackson has defended his son’s claims of mental illness, stating to the court, “This time a year ago I thought we may have lost him.”

[longnshort] I don't know if they came down for breakfast, but allegedly they came down to ...

I don't know if they came down for breakfast, but allegedly they came down to vote:

North Carolina Registers Over 583 Democrat Votes Over the Age of 112

There are obviously verifiable vote fraud problems in North Carolina.

In 2010 those problems surfaced meaningfully as indicated in the below voter fraud post from an earlier Charlotte Conservative Examiner article:

Perhaps in an effort to promote North Carolina as one of the healthiest States in the Nation, this latest voter twist comes to us from Susan Myrick of the Civitas Institute in North Carolina--not to be confused with Rep. But critics condemned the move, insisting customers should be free to make up their own minds.

High levels of salt have long been said to lead to a greater risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.

It is welcome news for those who love their fish and chips with a dash of salt and vinegar.

Guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has called for the speeding up of salt reduction measures, cutting the intake of salt from 6g a day per adult by 2015 to 3g by 2025.

Nice claims up to 40,000 deaths from heart disease and strokes could be prevented by changes to lifestyle.

But in a blow to that advice, this review has shown slashing our daily intake is not as beneficial as thought. People who cut the salt they ate by a small amount saw their blood pressure reduce after six months.

Professor Rod Taylor, from the University of Exeter, whose research is published in the latest edition of The Cochrane Library, said: “Intensive support and encouragement to reduce salt intake did lead to a reduction in salt eaten and a small reduction in blood pressure after more than six months.

“What we wanted to see was whether this dietary change also reduced a person’s risk of dying or suffering from cardiovascular events.”

Most studies recommended a reduction of 50 per cent of normal salt intake. A person’s daily salt intake from the research papers reviewed was on average 8-9g a day, so the reduction was to around 4g.

But this then had no long-term health benefits that may usually be expected from eating less salt.

The team reviewed seven studies that looked at 6,489 people, which they said was a large enough set of data from which to draw conclusions. Most experts say too much salt has detrimental health effects and cutting your intake can have beneficial effects in people with normal and high blood pressure but Prof Taylor said he could not find enough evidence for the theory.

He said: “We believe that we didn’t see big benefits in this study because the people in the trials we analysed only reduced their salt intake by a moderate amount, so the effect on blood pressure and heart disease was not large.”

His finding led him to call for health professionals to find more effective ways of reducing salt intake that are practical and inexpensive.

Prof Taylor said: “With governments setting ever lower targets for salt intake, and food manufacturers working to remove it from their products, it’s really important that we do some large research trials to get a full understanding of the benefits and risks of reducing salt intake.”

[longnshort] Keeping a “Little Jew” out of Britain

[LLCF] Yep, FNM and FRE all "had to keep up with the Joneses" and lend like nuts.... Wallace was a Democrat--as were most Jim Crow-era leaders.Hayes was trying to draw a parallel between the recent National Security Agency surveillance scandals and the extensive efforts by the U.S. government to spy on civil rights activists and black radicals in the 1960s.

The federal government then, too, was governed by Democrats.

As Rich Lowry noted recently, Democrats are often at great pains to blame Republicans for their own sordid racist history. "This provision is simply an industry ploy to continue to sell genetically engineered seeds even when a court of law has found they were approved by USDA illegally," the petition stated. "It is unnecessary and an unprecedented attack on U.S. judicial review. Congress should not be meddling with the judicial review process based solely on the special interest of a handful of companies."

Many food safety advocates maintain that there have not been enough studies into the potential health risks of GMO and GE seeds and crops, and the judicial power to stop companies from selling or planting them was one key recourse they were relying on to stop them from being sold if health risks come to light.

But the "Monsanto Protection Act" -- referred to as the "Farmer Assurance Provision" by its supporters -- removes that course of action, and those who are angry at Obama for signing the bill are also incensed with Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D- Md., who is accused of failing to give the amendment that inserted the language a proper hearing.

“In this hidden backroom deal, Sen. This is from the AP, and they're mad about this. The NRA has found a Justice Department memo, and they are using it to accuse the Obama administration of wanting to commandeer your guns. They are furious here in this AP story.

"The National Rifle Association is using a Justice Department memo it obtained to argue in ads that the Obama [regime] believes its gun control plans won't work unless the government seizes firearms and requires national gun registration..." Now, when everybody makes that accusation, what happens? If you, for example, say, "The regime wants to take your guns," there are catcalls of protest, howls of protest, and you are accused of being a conspiracy kook.

They say, "Nobody's ever suggested that! What are you talking about? Nobody wants to take your guns!" I think it's even happened to me. What happened is, the NRA managed to get their hands on a DOJ (Department of Justice) memo that undercuts all of these claims that the regime does not want to get hold of your guns. The AP makes it clear that the only way Obama will get what he wants is through registration and eventually banning guns. That's what the memo says.

The NRA has found it.

The AP is furious at the NRA for having found the memo and using it now. The AP even says, quote, "The NRA's assertion and its obtaining of the memo in the first place underscore the no-holds-barred battle under way as Washington's fight over gun restrictions heats up." Now, isn't this what American journalists used to do before the work began to exclusively represent the Democrat Party?

It used to be that if memos like this existed, if there were a secret memo that basically said the purpose of gun registration was to eventually be able to ban them, if there was such a memo, wouldn't the media be the ones to find that memo, and wouldn't the media win a Pulitzer for doing so? Speaking truth to power and all of that gibberish.

Well, now it don't work that way anymore. The media helps regimes hide such memos. The NRA got its hand on the memo and now the NRA is the bad guy. The AP is outraged that this crime researcher had the temerity to question Obama on his gun proposals. And never mind that this crime researcher at the NRA is actually the acting director of the National Institute of Justice. That's the Department of Justice research arm. He had previously been with the Rand corporation. He studied criminal justice issues. He's got a PhD in statistics. This guy found the memo.

The AP is essentially saying, "Who the hell is this guy to question Obama's expertise on guns? Who is this guy to question Obama's expertise on crime?" Because Obama's the expert in everything. He's the expert on health care. He's the expert on jobs. He's the expert on drugs. He's the expert manufacturing and selling them. He's the expert on everything. Nobody in any of these industries knows anything compared to what Obama knows. And nobody in these industries cares as much as Obama does. He's the expert on health care. He's the expert on health insurance. He's the expert on hospitals and how to run them. He's the expert in determining who should get treated medically and who shouldn't be.

The point is the NRA has this crime researcher that found this memo, and the memo undercuts all of Obama's claims. The memo makes it clear that the only way the government will get what they want is through registration and eventually banning guns. It's a memo that spells out current policy about guns and the policy is X. And what the memo points out is the only way to get to X is to take people's guns from them. You start by registering every damn one of them. It's one of these internal memos, government bureaucrat says, "Look, we eventually want to make having a gun illegal, how do we do it with the Second Amendment?"

[iframe width="585" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/jHmxY7zE5uc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" style="margin: 0px;"][/iframe]

So a bunch of guys start writing a memo. "Okay, if that's really what you want to do, here's how you would have to do it given the Constitution, the Second Amendment." That's what was found. It's a theoretical memo. It's not a policy memo yet. It's a theoretical memo, somebody asked to put together a policy, and what the memo makes clear is that the only way that Obama can get what he wants or that the government can get what they want regarding guns is massive, full-fledged registration and the eventual banning of guns.

I want to be very clear about this. Nobody has proposed banning guns. What has happened is somebody at the regime said to somebody else, "What do we have to do to get to point A or X?" And so these big thinkers accept the assignment, they look at it and they say, "If you really want to get to X, the only way you can get there, to have that policy, is total registration, but you're eventually gonna have to ban guns. It's the only way you can effect what you want, is to ban guns." That is what's been discovered. And that's what the NRA is using. And the NRA's being very careful. They're not accusing anybody of having this policy. All they're saying is that there exists a memo explaining, "If that's your objective, this is how you do it," not that they've put anything in a motion yet.

This undercuts the idea, you know, when the regime says, "We're not even thinking about banning guns." They are thinking about it. That's about all they're doing, but it is something that is in a memo under consideration, maybe seriously, unseriously, but the point is, it's being thought about. And the AP is furious that the NRA found the memo, because, according to the AP, they're misusing it, they're stating it's applicable in ways that it isn't, and that's not what the NRA is doing. The NRA is simply doing what I just did. The NRA is pointing out, "Hey, look, there's some people in government who are tinkering with how to get to point A on a policy, and here's what they would have to do to do it."

"A Justice Department official called the memo an unfinished review of gun violence research and said it does not represent administration policy." I'm sure it doesn't yet. "The memo says requiring background checks for more gun purchases could help, but also could lead to more illicit weapons sales. It says banning assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines produced in the future but exempting those already owned by the public, as Obama has proposed, would have limited impact because people now own so many of those items."

So they're coming up with ways around that. It would be like if John F. Kennedy says, "I need to get to the moon in ten years," so a bunch of people at NASA put together the plan. "This is what we would have to do." That's all that's happened. Don't anybody misunderstand. The point is the memo exists. The AP tried to suppress it along with the rest of the media. The NRA's hated and reviled, found it, and so now the NRA is the problem, not the regime.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Now, look here, folks, this AP piece also says this. "A Justice Department official who would only discuss the issue on condition of anonymity said the NRA ad misrepresents Obama's gun proposals and that the administration has never backed a gun registry or gun confiscation." Hey, Obama never backed same-sex marriage, either, until he did. That's just silly. "Hey, he didn't back this." Throughout this AP story, I mean, you have to love it. The AP constantly speaks for the White House in this article. Politics, the White House does not support, policies the White House does support. I mean, it's just really sickening.

[longnshort] "now rumors re pope's resignation, gay clique, pedophilia, male prostitutes, and...

"now rumors re pope's resignation, gay clique, pedophilia, male prostitutes, and theft are not even posted here."

ever since Obama has been in office those are all normal activities now

[hdl] awhile ago there was a lot of stuff here re church pedophilia. now rumors re po...

awhile ago there was a lot of stuff here re church pedophilia.

now rumors re pope's resignation, gay clique, pedophilia, male prostitutes, and theft are not even posted here.

[Mike M2] Potato will never die. There are handwritten notes from distraught mothers, accounts of furious phone calls from brothers and perplexed inquiries from the police following up on allegations of priests sexually abusing children.

Over four decades, particularly under Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, parishioners in the nation’s largest Roman Catholic archdiocese repeatedly tried to alert church authorities about abusive priests in their midst, trusting that the church would respond appropriately.

But the internal personnel files on 124 priests released by the archdiocese under court order on Thursday reveal a very different response: how church officials initially disbelieved them and grew increasingly alarmed over the years, only as multiple victims of the same priest came forward and reported similar experiences.

Even then, in some cases, priests were shuttled out of state or out of the country to avoid criminal investigations.

A sampling of the 12,000 pages suggests that Cardinal Mahony and other top church officials dealt with the accusations of abuse regularly and intimately throughout the last several decades. It often took years to even reach the realization that a priest could no longer simply be sent to a rehabilitation center and instead must be removed from ministry or even defrocked.

In one case, the Rev. José I. Ugarte was accused by a doctor of having drugged and raped a young boy in a hotel in Ensenada and of taking boys every weekend to a cabin in Big Bear. But rather than turn Father Ugarte over to the authorities, Cardinal Mahony decided to send him back to Spain, made him sign a document promising not to return to the United States without permission for seven years, not to celebrate Mass in public and to seek employment in “a secular occupation in order to become self-supporting.”

The current archbishop, José H. Gomez, who succeeded Cardinal Mahony when he retired two years ago, took the unusual if not unprecedented step on Thursday night of censuring his predecessor, calling the documents he released late Thursday “brutal and painful reading” and announcing that he was removing him from administrative and public duties. He also accepted the resignation of one of his auxiliary bishops, Thomas Curry.

But in an extraordinary public confrontation between bishops, Cardinal Mahony adamantly defended himself on Friday, posting on his blog a letter he had sent to Archbishop Gomez. The cardinal insisted that his approach to sexual abuse evolved as he learned more over the years, and that his archdiocese had been in the forefront of reforms to prevent abuse and respond to victims.

Cardinal Mahony implied that his successor’s censure of him was unexpected and unwarranted: “Not once over these past years did you ever raise any questions about our policies, practices or procedures in dealing with the problem of clergy sexual misconduct involving minors.”

Church experts agreed that it was the first time that a bishop had publicly condemned another bishop’s failures in the abuse scandal, which has occupied the American bishops for nearly three decades. They also said that Archbishop Gomez had gone as far as he could under the church’s canon laws to discipline Cardinal Mahony. He could not, they said, take away his authority to celebrate Mass, but he did order him not to preside at confirmations, a ceremonial role that often keeps retired archbishops in the public eye.

The Los Angeles church files are not unlike other documents unearthed in the church’s long-running abuse scandal in the United States, but it appears to be the largest cache.

In 1977, the mother of a 10-year-old boy wrote to Msgr. John Rawden saying that George Miller, then a priest at parish in Pacoima, had taken her son on a fishing trip and molested him. The accusation was noted in Mr. Miller’s files, but he denied the charges and was presumed to be innocent. Then in 1989 another pastor complained that Mr. Miller violated church policy by repeatedly having young boys in his room in the rectory and traveling with them.

Mr. Miller was sent to a treatment center run by Catholic therapists in St. Louis in 1996. When he was scheduled to be released a year later, Msgr. Richard Loomis — who would eventually face his own allegations of sexual abuse — wrote Father Miller a letter saying that the “recent changes in the child abuse reporting law and the statute of limitations in California have changed the way we have to look at many things in our personnel policies.” Monsignor Loomis went on to say that he could not return to the ministry in Los Angeles.

But two months later, in May 1997, Monsignor Loomis then wrote to Cardinal Mahony suggesting that Mr. Miller could seek to serve as a priest in Mexico through a “benevolent bishop” or return to California and “begin a secular life,” and live “somewhere that would minimize potential contact with those involved in his situation.”

After leaving St. Louis, Mr. Miller returned to California and by 2004 was under investigation by the police.

In a letter in 2004 to then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Mahony wrote: “The story of Father Miller is a very sad one. Clearly he never should have been ordained. Had the kinds of screenings we used now been employed in the 1950s, he would have never been admitted to the seminary.”

The documents also hint at the disillusionment on the part of church officials as they eventually realized that priests who had denied any accusations of abuse were eventually revealed as repeat violators.

In the case of Carlos Rodriguez, then a priest downtown, Los Angeles Police Department investigators called church officials to ask about a report that the priest took two teenage boys to the Grand Canyon and groped one boy’s groin. According to the files, Mr. Curry had already written to Cardinal Mahony about the allegation. The police said that when they called the church to speak with Mr. Rodriguez, the person who answered the phone responded by saying, “Oh no, they reported it, ” referring to the boy’s family.

In 2004, Mr. Rodriguez was sentenced to eight years in prison for molesting two brothers in the early 1990s, years after he was transferred because of the earlier allegations.

Another file chronicles the struggle by Cardinal Mahony and his advisers to discern the truth about accusations against Monsignor Loomis, a priest who himself helped advise the cardinal on abuse cases against priests in his role as vicar for clergy in the archdiocesan chancery. The archdiocese went to great lengths and expense to investigate the case, the files reveal.

They interviewed former colleagues of his, one who said, the notes show, “Loomis would be the last person he could think of who would be the subject of child molestation charges.”

Eventually in 2004, after several alleged victims stepped forward and a lawsuit was filed, Cardinal Mahony agreed to place Monsignor Loomis on administrative leave, writing on the document, “Although sad, we must follow our policies and the charter — regardless of where that leads,” a reference to the American bishops’ policies, or “charter” to protect young people.

Many victims said the release of the files felt like a vindication because they showed repeated abuse by the priests that church officials had often denied. “I wasn’t lying, I wasn’t embellishing, I wasn’t making it up,” said Esther Miller, 54, a mother of two who said she was abused by Michael Nocita, a priest, when she was in high school. “It shows the pattern of complicity. It shows the cover-up.”

Cardinal Mahony, who served from 1985 until 2011, when he reached mandatory retirement, has faced calls for his defrocking over his handling of the abuse cases for years. But the cardinal, a vocal champion of immigrant rights, remained hugely popular with Latinos here, who make up 40 percent of the four million parishioners in the archdiocese.

The church had fought for years to keep the documents secret, and until this week it argued that the names of top church officials should be kept private. But on Thursday, Judge Emilie Elias rejected the church’s requests to redact the names of officials before releasing the files. The diocese released the files, with the names of victims and many other church officials removed, less than an hour later.

The trove of documents suggests that church officials routinely sent priests accused of abuse out of state and in some cases out of the country to avoid the potential investigations from law enforcement.

Jennifer Medina reported from Los Angeles, and Laurie Goodstein from New York. Ian Lovett contributed reporting from Los Angeles.

[hdl] ed koch and lindsey graham - two good men.

[hdl] he is a sweet fellow. he left the thread when it was taken over by nutjobs. he d...

he is a sweet fellow. he left the thread when it was taken over by nutjobs. he did not want to waste his time here any more.

[longnshort] THE DEFECTIONS MOUNT [graphic]Mark Lynas The defectors from the True Church...

THE DEFECTIONS MOUNT

Mark Lynas

The defectors from the True Church of Green Religion (i.e., environmentalism) are starting to line up faster than defectors from Soviet Communism in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A few weeks ago, the reliably green British journalist Mark Lynas issued a mea culpa about his longtime opposition to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As I’ve experienced first hand, European opposition to GMOs is nearly as sacred as opposing plastic bags here in the U.S. (This is even true, to my great surprise, among many conservatives in Europe.) Here’s Lynas, from his lecture at the Oxford Farming Conference on January 3:

I want to start with some apologies. For the record, here and upfront, I apologise for having spent several years ripping up GM crops. I am also sorry that I helped to start the anti-GM movement back in the mid 1990s, and that I thereby assisted in demonising an important technological option which can be used to benefit the environment.

As an environmentalist, and someone who believes that everyone in this world has a right to a healthy and nutritious diet of their choosing, I could not have chosen a more counter-productive path. I now regret it completely.

So I guess you’ll be wondering – what happened between 1995 and now that made me not only change my mind but come here and admit it? Well, the answer is fairly simple: I discovered science, and in the process I hope I became a better environmentalist.

This week another icon of modern environmentalism defected from the party line: James Lovelock, the inventor of the famous “ Gaia hypothesis” beloved of environmentalists and fruit-juice drinkers everywhere. The proximate cause of his defection is his quite proper reaction against the wind power fanatics who are desecrating the English countryside. But as you’ll see his critique goes beyond contesting the wind-breaking nuttery of the greens. Here’s the relevant part of what Lovelock wrote a few days ago:

I am James Lovelock, scientist and author, known as the originator of Gaia theory, a view of the Earth that sees it as a self-regulating entity that keeps the surface environment always fit for life… I am an environmentalist and founder member of the Greens but I bow my head in shame at the thought that our original good intentions should have been so misunderstood and misapplied. We never intended a fundamentalist Green movement that rejected all energy sources other than renewable, nor did we expect the Greens to cast aside our priceless ecological heritage because of their failure to understand that the needs of the Earth are not separable from human needs. We need take care that the spinning windmills do not become like the statues on Easter Island, monuments of a failed civilisation.

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2013/01/the-defections-mount.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+powerlineblog%2Flivefeed+%28Power+Line%29&utm_content=Bloglines

[Mike M2] guardian.co.uk
