Virtual Retinal Display™ (VRD™) technology (see mvis.com is the key innovation that Microvision has targeted to dominate the personal display category. Microvision's mission is to lead the way in the development of strategically important technologies for patterning light to capture and display images and to continuously create meaningful technological advantage as the foundation for sound relationships with partners, suppliers and customers. VRD technology offers an innovative new method of displaying text or graphical information of any kind. The device rapidly scans a low-power pinpoint beam of colored light onto the retina of the viewer's eye, creating a high resolution, full-motion image without the use of screens or externally projected images. VRD technology is designed to enable the development and cost-effective manufacture of personal displays -- lightweight, high-performance head-worn or hand-held visual displays -- for a variety of applications. The company's customers are manufacturers of electronic and computing products for use in Military, Industrial, Medical, Communications and Consumer applications, who value Microvision's technology because it uniquely enables them to enhance existing products and to create new products featuring dramatic improvements in display performance and user convenience at a reasonable cost. Microvision was founded in 1993 in Seattle, Washington. It is a publicly held company listed on NASDAQ. I post in case it helps others too.

?

MicroVision

MVIS (market cap is $0.259B was $0.283B)

?

Oh dear. Am I doing this again? Is the company doing this again, a new CEO which means yet again a new direction? Sigh. Read on, and hope. For years, I've copied and pasted the previous post. Let's start fresh.

?

Microvision (MVIS) is a (perpetual) startup based on the technology that is an oscillating mirror on a chip. Shine light on the mirror and the oscillations can produce an image. Let the mirror reflect what it sees, and it becomes a sensor. Shine light on it and receive that reflected light, and it is effectively LiDAR. The market potential for the projector is roughly the same as the smartphone market because a projector has already been produced that fits in a smartphone. As a bar code sensor, it has been demonstrated for reading barcodes as well as helping industrial automation. As a LiDAR unit, it can enable autonomous vehicles. Lots of potential.

?

Lots of potential, but each CEO has departed without their initiative becoming successful. Arguably, some of those ideas may have and could be profitable, but they were set aside as new managers arrived. This has been going on since at least 1999. The company has survived through dilution, which means my original stake has been diminished significantly. I believe in the potential based on market needs, not personal emotions. I am also saddened by the correlation of shifting development directions with each new management shift. The ideas that have been abandoned have rarely been explained in terms of market conditions and are replaced with the prospects of the next shiny option, and yet, I suspect some of those earlier ideas may be valid if they'd pursued them or returned to them.

?

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 1999 (though the very first shares are gone). I continue to hold because the price is so low that the only benefit to a sale may be for tax losses, and because, if only by luck, I think the company may be profitable because a customer wants the product regardless of what management has in mind.

Dilution means that I no longer have more than enough if the company finally succeeds and the stock reaches the heights I think are possible. Some day, some day...

(I've also collected links to the other discussion boards and my other stocks over on my blog trimbathcreative.net

For even more details, follow my blog's tags for MicroVision and MVIS, which reach back a decade.

trimbathcreative.net

trimbathcreative.net

& from my One Company One Story series on YouTube

youtu.be )

[tktrimbath] My mid-year review of MVIS (same old, same old - Lots of promise. MicroVision's advantage is based on the chip's scalability, the lack of pixel-sized constraints (as compared to LEDs), lower power requirements, and small package.

Before LiDAR, the company targeted short-throw projectors, projectors embedded in smartphones, augmented reality eyewear (see Hololens and more), as well as game controllers, bar code scanners, and orthoscopes. And probably more. The company has always operated under constraints from NDAs, the need to protect competition sensitive product developments, and some exclusive contracts that were ill-suited for the company, in retrospect.

It is easy to imagine that the company wasn't persistent enough in pursuing some of those products as they were first movers in those fields.

Now, competition has caught up. Also, corporate hopes pinned on singular products languished if the product or customer failed to deliver. Each CEO also resteers the company to distinguish their era from the previous one. The effect has been for the company to be seen as a tech test bench play shop that is dependent on demos and customers rather than faith in the company's products to lead to financial success.

Forward Looking Statements suggested at least some profits in 2023, but those weren't expected to reach cash-flow positive - yet. My shares are now old enough to have graduated college, worked for a few years, then gone back for a Masters, started a family, had kids, and watch them enter school. Well, it hasn't been any of the previous hoped-for periods for the last twenty years - though there was that time of flirting with hope about a year or so again."

First, the basics for folks who aren't familiar with the company.

MicroVision is a company based on the simple yet complicated technology: a mirror on a chip. Oscillate the mirror the right way, shine the right lights the right way, and it is possible to build a pico-projector that can fit inside a smartphone. Oscillate the mirror the right way, let the light strike the right sensors, and it is possible to build sensors that can act like bar-code readers or compact radars. The fact that the mirror is very small means it can be moved very quickly, can be very compact, use less power, and be easier to a customer to integrate into the customer's product.

Great plan. I've liked it for years, decades.

I continue to believe the company and its technology can do to electronic screens what laptops did to desktops and what desktops did to mainframes. Nice idea, but evidently not yet. Currently the company's components are in Microsoft products (ala Hololens), but not financially significant, except in unit price. The current CEO (each seems to advance preferred products and abandon those of their predecessors) is heavily emphasizing the LiDAR components that help vehicles to drive with much less or even no human input. That too, is a potentially large market.

And yet, promising technology has not developed a profitable company - yet. Yet, may, probably, could and all those other Forward-Looking Statement words may clear communication channels of any fault for a lack of success. But maybe the company will finally have news that is positive, significant, and quantifiable. Maybe.

Another copy&paste from the past;

"Great promise. Great risk (so far).

Maybe within the next 6-9 months, or 9-18 months, or longer?"

Supposedly within that time the company is expecting to make approximately $10M-$15M. That will be positive, but not sufficient to make cash flow positive.

The stock market is primed for volatility in MVIS. Hints of news can drive up the price. The stock is heavily shorted, which makes the price twitchy. With no real news as a foundation, the price has had little to sustainably build upon. Considering the technology, the growth potential could create a headline stock, leaving the label of 'meme stock' behind.

For even more details, follow my blog's tags for MicroVision and MVIS, which reach back a decade.

trimbathcreative.net

trimbathcreative.net

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 1999 (though the very first shares are gone). I post in case it helps others too.

MicroVision

MVIS (market cap is $0.390B was $0.634B)

Oh, MicroVision; will it be yet again another 6-9 months, or 9-18 months, or longer? Well, it hasn't been any of the previous hoped-for periods for the last twenty years - though there was that time of flirting with hope about a year or so again.

MicroVision is an electronic component designer and manufacturer developing a wide series of applications based on a chip equipped with an oscillating mirror. Shine light on the chip in one direction and it can display an image. Shine it the other way and the chip becomes a sensor. Expand the spectrum and it can send or detect or both send and direct radar images, and probably even more applications.

The easiest application to understand is their ability to create a projector that fits inside a smartphone. There's no limit to the always-in-focus image, though light fall-off happens as the size of the image increases. While such devices have entered the market, none have been successful enough to generate significant income. Recent optimism came from Microsoft's the US Army's use of the chips to generate Augmented Reality images. Microsoft's Hololens allows interactivity with the image, including allow others to interact with other. The Army's application allowed soldiers to see more of what was around them, particularly useful was being able to see outside a tank or through a wall - as long as there were cameras to feed them the image. This may be too early or too little. The remaining large and obvious effort is to develop LiDAR units for autonomous cars or for home security systems.

As stated above, MicroVision has had reason for optimism every year for the last twenty years. Many technical hurdles seem to be cleared. Many products have now been tested in various markets, with other products ready to advance. An optimist can find more than enough to be encouraged. A pessimist can say that they've never succeeded before so they may never do so. MicroVision, and hence MVIS, are largely driven by sentiment rather than by financial reports. Great promise. Great risk (so far).

Maybe within the next 6-9 months, or 9-18 months, or longer?

For even more details, follow my blog's tags for MicroVision and MVIS, which reach back a decade.

trimbathcreative.net

trimbathcreative.net

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 1999 (though the very first shares are gone). The company's key technology is a mirror-on-a-chip (MEMS) that can be oscillated to capture, produce, or capture and produce images in visible light and adjacent wavelengths. I see them as having the potential to disrupt the laptop market as significantly as the laptop disrupted the CRT market. Ironically, their method of creating an image is similar to the scanning method used in CRTs.

MicroVision should be a case study in business schools. Great potential. Too long gestation. Shifting business targets and markets. Unprofitable despite decades of effort. The company is in possibly its best financial condition, partly thanks to management's response during a recent buyout conjecture, meme status, and short squeeze. This year's focus is LiDAR for autonomous vehicles; but word of displays, home automation, and various NDA work continue.

For even more details, follow my blog's tags for MicroVision and MVIS, which reach back a decade.

trimbathcreative.net

trimbathcreative.net

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 1999 (though the very first shares are gone). I like their IP portfolio so I'll likely buy some at some point but I'm still waiting a bit to pull the trigger since I expect it to drop a little further. If they decide to hang it up, they've got value in their intellectual property that a lot of companies would love to own. I don't know if they have a cash problem or not. Their CEO as recently as this week says they've got sufficient cash to last this year and into next. They have no debt. It definitely belongs in the speculative wing of the portfolio. It's always fun to have two or three of those for entertainment. I flipped it several times this past summer when their share price was going wild. Without their IP, I wouldn't be looking at it.

Pass me the dice. C'mon seven. The great majority of the popular posts were about MVIS. I write about personal finance, other stocks, frugality, community, innovations and inventions - and none come close to the amount of traffic MVIS generates. The top three referrers in order were Reddit, Twitter, Facebook. Filling in the next gap were Stocktwits, Silicon Investor, and Motley Fool. And, it wasn't just 2021 and 'meme' stocks, which I also wrote about. Every year has been similar, though 2021 was very much about MVIS. As for 2022? Well, we were waiting for "next year". Hopefully 2022 is it (and we're not treating "next year" like the fact that tomorrow never comes.)

https://trimbathcreative.net/2022/01/01/popular-posts-in-2021/

[tktrimbath] My End of Year Synopsis (Ha!) of MVIS INTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to s...

My End of Year Synopsis (Ha!) of MVIS

INTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I own the stocks I own, and so I can check back and see if their stories have changed. I post in case it helps others too.

MicroVision

MVIS (market cap is $0.822B was $2.65B)

MicroVision is a manufacturer of electronic subcomponents based on the technology inherent in a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System) mirror on a chip. By properly employing the chip it is possible to develop a range of applications because light impinging on the mirror can become a projector, or a sensor, or both. Currently the primary commercial product in production is incorporated into Microsoft's Hololens augmented reality headset. The primary product in development is a miniaturized LiDAR sensor that enables autonomous vehicles to 'see' the world around them. Other projector applications include those for entertainment, various interactive products (like smart speakers that include a visual interface projected on nearby surfaces), as well as projectors embedded in smartphones - which have already been made commercially available, but did not gain wide adoption. The other sensor applications include smarthome sensors, as well as industrial robot applications.

As I wrote in a recent blog post, "I’ve seen the technology advances from punch cards to keyboards, from mainframes to mini-computers to PCs to laptops, from reading printers to CRTs to LCDs/LEDs and saw the natural progression from fragile flat panels to virtual imaging."

Despite being labeled a 'meme stock', the company has been working on these technologies since the mid-90s. The good news is that most of the elements of the business have continued to develop. The not-so-good news is that the same is true for the competitors to the point that MicroVision's early mover advantage has been dramatically shrunk. The other not-so-good news is that, despite that many years of effort and continual impressive potential, the company has yet to demonstrate sustainable business results.

Thanks to the company's meme status, management was able to generate sufficient funds to allow independent expansion - eliminating the need for buyouts. There is good reason to believe that Microsoft's Hololens may provide growing revenues for MicroVision, that the LiDAR business may become profitable soon enough, and that the other applications can generate significant revenues, as well.

For many years I've effectively wondered if each semi-annual synopsis will precede the company's breakthrough moment, or its demise. The company's position in terms of cash, technology, market, customer, product, and public awareness have rarely if ever been this positive. And yet, history suggests caution.

As if this 'synopsis' wasn't long enough, here's a recent and longer blog post with more details. My MVIS Dream as of December 15 2021 trimbathcreative.net

For even more details, follow the tags for MicroVision and MVIS, which reach back a decade.

trimbathcreative.net

trimbathcreative.net

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 1999 (though the very first shares are gone). I post in case it helps others too.

MicroVision

MVIS (market cap is $2.65B was $0.788B)

MicroVision has finally hit the headlines, which are frequently wrong or incomplete, which means this description might be more useful than usual.

MicroVision is an electronic component company with a range of products based on a simple idea: a chip that includes an oscillating mirror. By oscillating the mirror and properly directing the light the component can be a sensor or a projector or both. Its current high-profile applications are for augmented reality (Microsoft's Hololens, most likely; and IVAS probably), LiDAR (basically radar for driverless vehicles, industrial applications, and consumer uses like automated home security systems), interactive displays (adding interactive video to audio-only smart speakers like Alexa, etc.), and small dedicated displays (like ViewSmart's smartphone with an embedded display). None of the products are as new as the news may suggest. The company has been working on such products and variations for over twenty years. They may have finally made sufficient progress for the market and the rest of the components to have matured enough to produce commercially viable products.

The company's products are considered valuable enough, and the long-term struggle damaged the company's finances severely enough that the company began talking to other companies about mergers and acquisitions. Suggestions are that those talks are making progress, though no details, including timing, have been more than suggestions.

While the company's products and finances progress, the stock has attracted a large cadre of independent investors who see MVIS as an opportunity to profit from short sellers. (One measure of crowd size is the reddit community growing from ~1,000 to over 40,000 users in about a year.) Such investors have shown some success in affecting other stocks (GME, AMC, as I recall). In the first half of 2021, MVIS' share price increased $221%. At one time the increase was over 10,000% in under two years because the share price hit a low at $0.15.

The fact that there are three developments developing simultaneously (products, merger/acquisition, shorts v longs) means trying to fully understand the company's development quickly becomes a lesson in multi-dimensional game theory (or at least something so complex that I don't want to wade through all of the scenarios in my spare time.) The products are estimated to be worth billions of dollars, depending on product acceptance, market capture, and timing. Buyouts typically are decided by finding a buyout package that benefits 51% of the vote, which is not the same as 51% of the shareholders; and can be disassociated from the company's value. Attacks on the short sellers can be independent of the company's value, success, or promise. And then there are factions within each of these possibilities. One measure is relatively easy to understand: in April 2020 MVIS was trading at $0.15. Now, estimates are frequently expecting more than 200 times that, some as high as hundreds of dollars per share. In the meantime the stock is high risk because the products haven't generated substantial revenue, no buyout details have been released, and the short attackers have yet to launch a coordinated and successful assault. Good news is highly anticipated, but until it arrives the stock remains a speculation. Good luck figuring this one out.

At least the company was smart enough to raise sufficient capital to can sustain operations much more confidently that they could for the previous several years.

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 1999 (though the very first shares are gone). My patience has been revitalized thanks to the rocket-like rise from $0.15. Dilution no longer means that I have more than enough if the company finally succeeds and the stock reaches the heights I think are possible. I doubt I'll buy more at these prices, and have shed some shares as bills must be paid.

(I've also collected links to the other discussion boards and my other stocks over on my blog trimbathcreative.net )
