Dear Monica:

I finally found your neighborhood, and saw what an excellent view you had offered me and my family to watch the Fourth of July festivities, before you became ill. Indeed, we did not need to sit on the roof, since there is a view at the end of the street, looking out beyond the East River into New York Harbor, towards the Statue of Liberty. Brooklyn Heights was once quite affluent, but now the buildings are aging, and are undergoing a period of renovation, so it is not unusual to see construction on any given block. Still, it is obviously a fashionable neighborhood. Your building was once a large townhouse, subdivided into apartments, on a quiet side street. Several blocks away, there are streets bustling with bars, restaurants, and boutiques.

I have a vision of you in the neighbor, a local fixture, with your favorite bar and butcher, perhaps a bakery you like to frequent, being friendly to "newbies" and making them feel welcome to the neighborhood. You were the kind of person who makes a neighborhood more than an agglomeration of houses and apartment buildings. You got people together and made things happen.

Anyway, today is your birthday, and to mark the occasion, I wanted to write you a short poem:

Monica, so soon to leave, was there a hurry?
did you decide to make arrangements in advance,
so that someday, when all are gathered,
you would be hostess of an elegant soiree,
and we would marvel at the table you had set,
and we would eat and drink and talk awhile together,
late into night,
as the fire burns low
and we move closer
to keep
warm.......

Happy birthday, sweetie!

Neo
