Owning a small farm in Texas(Yes!Some Texans have small things)near the Mexico border and having lived in California I've had first hand experience with water shortages and the issues relating to these shortages. Each year as I get my irrigation cooperative bill, I find the rates have increased and a notice that the the available supply from the Rio Grande river and other sources is becoming more limited. As for California, the city of Los Angeles has to secure their drinking water supply from sources hundreds of miles away. The fertile San Joaquin Valley that supplies a major portion of our crops, would become a huge desert without the water supply that is becoming harder to supply.

Related to this growing shortage issue, I have found the following information:
1)The EPA currently estimates that $138 billion will have to be invested between now and 2015 to provide safe drinking water for our population that is expected to reach 310 million.
2)The UN projects that by 2025 some 5.5 billion people will face a lack of drinking water.
3)More than 97% of the Earth's water is salt water, and 2% is found in the polar ice caps. This leaves only 1% in lakes, wells, and rivers from which we get our water supply.
4)The Amazon River has 15% of the world's total renewable supply of freshwater, but only has .4% of the global population in the area.
5)Asia has 61% of the world's population and only 36% of the renewable supply of freshwater.
6)The Federal Safe Drinking Water Act becomes effective in October of 199.

With all of these factors in place, IMO there are investment opportunities available in this area of water shortages and safety issues. With this in mind, I'm starting this thread so that interested parties can discuss stocks that might benefit from these issues.

I have identified the following stocks as a starting point for our discussion: Osmonics(OSM) Ionics(ION) U.S. Filter(USF) American States Water(AWR) and Strategic Diagnostics(SDIX). I will disclose that I have a position in the stock of SDIX.
