this company is currently privately held, but perhaps not for long given current internet mania. the following is culled from various portions of their website (http://stamps.com ): Stamps.com, formerly StampMaster, Inc., was founded in 1996 with the mission of using the power of the digital age to streamline the way consumers and businesses purchase and apply postage. The company has worked within the specifications of the United States Postal Service's Information Based Indicium Program ("IBIP") to create a system that meets USPS' security and reliability standards. Stamps.com was authorized by USPS to commence Beta testing of its product in the Washington, D.C. area in August, 1998. Stamps.com has developed an e-commerce system that enables users to print postage delivered over the Internet directly onto envelopes, labels or business documents without any additional PC hardware. Stamps.com Internet Postage is the first purely Internet-based (no hardware required) product to receive USPS approval for Beta and market testing. Customers download a small software program (approximately 2 Mb) from Stamps.com's web site for free. After installing the software, customers register online with Stamps.com and apply for a United States Postal Service (USPS) license. After receiving the USPS license, the customer account is then activated. At that time, the customer will purchase postage electronically using a credit card or an electronic funds transfer from a bank account. Customers can then print postage directly onto envelopes, labels and business documents using nothing more than an ordinary laser or inkjet printer with a 300-dpi (or greater) resolution. Stamps.com Internet Postage prints a new form of postage, the indicium, developed by the United States Postal Service's Information Based Indicium ("PC Postage") Program. The new 'stamp' is a combination of human readable information and a 2-dimensional bar code that contains delivery information and a digital signature that makes the individual mailpiece unique.
