Astris Energi's European Unit Delivers Fuel Cell Power System Aimed at Homes

Astris Energi's European Unit Delivers Fuel Cell Power System Aimed at
Homes

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Canada, Apr 6, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Astris Energi Inc.
(OTCBB: ASRF), pioneer developer of Alkaline Fuel Cell (AFC) electrical power
systems, announced today that its European subsidiary has completed, tested and
delivered a 4-kilowatt AFC generator to the Technical University of Mines,
Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Built and tested by Astris s.r.o., Astris Energi's European laboratory in
Benesov C.R., the system is the precursor of fuel cell co-generation units to
provide electricity and heat for homes of the future, according to Jiri K. Nor,
president of Astris, who has just returned from three weeks' work at its Czech
facility.

The fuel cell uses gaseous hydrogen fuel combined with oxygen from the air to
produce 4-kw of electrical power, plus a similar amount of energy as by-product
heat, Nor explained. The compact system, Model E4B, measures only 48X56X30
inches in size.

"Such an appliance, installed in a basement or utility room, will generate all
the electricity the home needs, plus low-grade heat suitable for home heating,"
Nor said.

"In this mode," he added, "nearly 100 percent of the energy contained in the
fuel is used, whereas in conventional power generation by electric utilities,
more than 60 percent of total energy is lost by the time the electricity is
delivered to the home."

This new power source stems from a joint project devoted to demonstration and
testing of novel, environmentally friendly and clean, benign energy systems.

It is jointly managed by the Technical University of Ostrava and MANET ENVI
s.r.o., with the Grant Agency of Czech Republic as the principal sponsor.
Delivery of the 4-kw AFC generator to the University of Mines completed the
first phase of the project, Nor said.

He added that the University has expressed interest in pursuing the use of
methanol as an alternative source of hydrogen fuel for the system.

According to Radek Kotoucek, Dipl. Ing., project manager at the Astris
laboratory, "With a suitable reformer, we can feed the AFC with hydrocarbon fuel
such as natural gas or with liquid methanol."

Astris Energi here and its Czech subsidiary are also developing other 1 to 4-kw
AFC systems to power small vehicles such as golf carts, in-plant delivery cars
and airport ramp vehicles, as well as sources of electricity and heat in
motorhomes.
