With the twentieth century winding down, various and sundry press organizations are offering Top 100 lists. This seemed a topic worth addressing on SI: Who are the 100 most influential people of the century? This list should be distinguished from some others by restricting itself to those who made a contribution, not those who threatened to tear down the edifice--- no Hitler, no Stalin, no Mao, please. It should also recognize the varieties of human achievement, in art, literature, science, culture high and low, not only politics and business. I will try to keep track of the various suggestions, and will eventually try to compose a "Thread List". Of course, my selections or placement may lead to further argument, and a proliferation of lists. All the better! It is my hope that productive discussions will arise from pondering this..... |
