The R. L. Hearn Generating Station began operation in 1951 on Toronto's waterfront. It was closed on July 1, 1983. I know because I was there.
The employees met with Ontario Hydro's management at the time and expressed their concern about closing the plant. There were proposals to convert it into a cogeneration plant.
Ontario Hydro phased out cogeneration in the late 1940's and they were not going to even consider it. The Hearn was closed.

Over the years it was proposed that the station re-open a number of times. Premier Ernie Eves has now announced that the proposed public - private plan to "Return the Hearn" site as a generating station should procced a quickly as possible. This will provide energy security to downtown Toronto, like the R.L. Hearn TGS did for so many years. |
