Return to Al Gore vs George Bush: the moderate's perspective

BUSH HIDES PAST DUI

This changes the whole election. What else has this man hidden from the American people. We cannot trust this man.

From ABCNews.Com: Breaking News

Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush was arrested for drunken driving in 1976, an aide to the Texas governor confirmed tonight.

The campaign confirmed Bush was taken into custody by police near his family home in Kennebunkport, Maine, on Labor Day weekend in 1976. The campaign acknowledged the matter after it was reported by a Maine television station.

Something He Is Not Proud Of
Bush pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, was fined $150 and his driving privileges were suspended. Bush spokeswoman Karen Hughes said he was stopped after leaving a bar, where he had had consumed several beers. Hughes said other people were in the car, but she did not know how many.
This was a mistake, Hughes said. This is something he is not proud of. Drinking and driving is wrong.
The Republican presidential candidate has said he quit drinking right after his 40th birthday July 6, 1986. Alcohol was beginning to compete for my affections, he said.
Laura Bush, the governors wife, was calling their daughters to tell reveal the news.
Hughes acknowledged the campaign has known about the arrest for some time, but said Bush had not shared this incident publicly because he felt it set a bad example. That the report would come out now mere days before the presidential election raises certain questions, she said.
I hope something the governor did 24 years ago would not have an effect on the election, Hughes said.
