Is 4G Wireless the next step after 3rd Generation wireless mobile systems or the alternative, or a supplement to 3rd Generation wireless mobile systems?
With IMT-2000 CDMA based 3G networks and services starting to gain traction at mid-decade, the wireless industry is already looking to the next generation, and to technologies that complement and enhance 3rd Generation. Early in this decade Nokia stated that "so far a new technology has yet to appear that constitutes enough of a step beyond third-generation wireless to gain the tag 4G, while end-user demands have also yet to warrant its commercial development".
Today 4G is an evolving vision or a concept that is increasingly being discussed by governments, research organizations, wireless vendors, and standards organizations, although until recently there has also been little in the way of standardization initiatives for 4G.
