The Aristocrats: Advertising, Convergence, Privacy and Profits

Think advertising is dead ? Did you hear, Facebook is doing an IPO ? And, they just announced they're pulling in ONE BILLION DOLLARS a year pre-IPO, most of it from ADVERTISING ? Apparently, they're doing something right that others just aren't getting quite so right as they are ?

Facebook Files for IPO; Reveals $1 Billion in 2011 Profit, Advertising Is 83% of Facebook's Revenue

There clearly are new opportunities other than advertising that will exist, too, as the tech advances, but, advertising has long been a focus of the tech development... from long before the tech worked... because of the obvious $ interest in linking the real mobility of consumers to parallel mobility in the ability to target them with advertising where they are, and when they are. Tech enables convergence... and convergence will both require and enable more new tech. The unexpected will occur and new potentials will be realized. That's what always happens when new technologies are finally realized. Innovation happens.

And, just as clearly, a lot of the future opportunities that have been envisioned, for years already, once we all have fully web-enabled smartphones with 3-D projection video, have thus far largely failed to materialize in workable form... or in a form consumers accept as a tool that is a benefit, a seamless addition, rather than an vile intrusion. Much of that difficulty seems it has occurred because of myopia in the "push"... but, much also because of intransigent resistance to enabling the tech that's possible to deploy already. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't be trying right now, looking to catch (or create) the "next Facebook" ?

Mobility in our personal technology is a still fairly new reality. There are already many things you can say "there's an app for that" about. Amazing, sure, but, not all that much different about most of them, though... as they're not "fully converged" enough to have considered our NEEDS that can be met because our own mobility can now be "technology assisted" ? There are still some remarkable examples of what's possible. But, our focus isn't just on the evolution of technology... it's on finding "the next big thing" early... so that we can make money from the trends we identify... before most others are even aware those technologies... or trends in adopting them... exist.

So, that's the topic... converging our way to "the next big thing" since blogvertising... didn't quite get us there? Read on, and converge into the cloud of companies addressing needs in hardware, cloud services, mobile search, advertising, location-based services and the growing ubiquity of the Internet of Things... and all the other things those things, and the potentials they enable, will require. A list of "convergence" focused stocks is last:
