Did a bigot insult you? Did someone assume you were "gay" because they didn't agree with you about gay rights (and perhaps they thought assuming you were gay, and telling you that you were, was an insult.)? Maybe they said you were black, because you are for civil rights, or thought you were a minority because you approved of affirmative action. Whatever the bigot you encountered assumed, why not post it here?
I've seen plenty of posts that would qualify to be posted on this thread. I do NOT want you to trash the bigot- please do not call him or her names, or discuss him or her- because bigots won't be able to post here more than once, and I think it's generally unpleasant to talk about people in forums where they cannot respond. What I think would be constructive, would be to talk about the points in your post you feel the bigot missed, or perhaps discuss what set the bigot off in the first place. We might also discuss the pressures of life that make people in to bigots- for example, in this complicated world, is it just easier to simplify things down to black and white, or gay and not-gay- even if categorizing people that way doesn't make rational sense? Perhaps some people want a simple world, even if it doesn't comport with "reality". Or maybe bigotry is genetic- perhaps we can have a nature/nurture debate on it (and wouldn't it be interesting if there were twin studies in the area of bigotry). I don't know how much interest there is in this- but I hope there is some.
I have been asked about the rules of this forum- because moderators routinely violate their own rules, I would suggest to you that like other forums, this one is primarily shaped by whim. But I did start by elminating from this forum everyone I have on ignore- since I refuse to try to moderate people I do not find it worthwhile to read. I will certainly eliminate people who make personal attacks. |
