VA TECH IN THE ACC....... What more can be said. To many of us this is a lifelong dream come true. From the days of Frank Mosley Va Tech has had eyes on the ACC but has always been on the refusal side of that prestigious conference. Many congrats to Governor Warner for putting the pressure on the UVA chancellor to stonewall the vote until VT was accepted.
Now lets talk football and the prospects for the upcoming season. I have talked to all my relatives and freinds and about the best record that I can predict for the 2004-2005 season is 8 and 4. Some alums are thinking more along 7 and 5 and a few are at 5 and 7.
Just when the controversy was abating on whom the starting QB was going to be Marcus Vick had to have a great Spring game and lead the white team to a 20 to 0 win over the maroon team led by Brian Randall. I was at the game and Randall's performance was abysmal.
Without going into a lot of personal opinions there happens to be a contributing to the deliquincy of a minor charge that has been levied against Vick, Imoh, and redshirt freshman Brenden Hill. The court case is coming up May 14th in Montgomery County Va. Depending on the outcome of this misdemeanor trial these young men may be facing anything from a 3 to 6 game suspension to dismissal from the team.
It's hard to say whose fault it was but there were certainly no awards given out to any running backs at the Spring game. Justin Hamilton was moved back to Tailback from Wide receiver. He played Tailback in high school. Hamilton did score and looked fast. True freshman Bell was effective between the tackles however out swift footed linebackers and corners easily ran him down when he tried to run outside. I certainly saw no clones of Suggs or Jones in the backfield. Another big question mark is will Huuuummmmes...be back in the fall.
Many changed were made on the OL and it showed. There was poor blocking on the OL and no long runs were broken except for the 48 yd td run called back by Marcus Vick because someone barely touched his yellow jersey.
Davis and Lallis looked good on the DL. Trott after being moved from LB to DE looked lost. Trott had the game of his life against Miami last year and thereafter looked young and inexperienced. I hope the move to DE will benefit Jordan Trott and the team.
Jimmy Williams looked more comfortable at the CB spot and to be honest his replacement at the safety spot Vince Fuller was not tested by Randall all day long so it is not possible to give an update on him. The brightspot of the day was Roland Minor at CB. He had 10 unassisted tackles, a tip, and never let anyone get behind him all day long. Roland is a rs fresh and in my op was co player of the game along with MV II.
The defensive line centered by the Lewis brothers played well and my personal upcoming favorite Sandidge looked strong bulked up and a step slower so that is a hard one to call.
Xavier Adibi will be a player..no doubt...the brother of Nathaniel Adibi and being recruited as a LB looked comfortable playing that position. He needs to put on 15 pounds but will see playing time this year.
Imoh and Minor returned punts but Schmidt and Burns were kicking them so high a return was out of the question. It looks like the punting game will notch it up a notch this year.
Williams had a beautiful corner blitz and I hope Foster will cut him loose a few times each game. Williams by Tech standards is a big corner and he can do some damage. Minor is a heavy hitter and those two will make the 11 oclock news a few times this year.
I never saw any passes over the middle and the tight ends in customary Tech fashion were ineffective.
The players looked like they were reading the offense better in the 4-3 defense but in Spring game the defense always plays better if for no other reason than no trick plays are allowed.
The new full back did not run but a time or two and was ineffective. I think his name is King. I never saw him put any line backers on their butts.
Well ...I guess you can tell I am not too excited about the prospects this year...especially if Vick is suspended for part of the season or if Beamer starts Randall as expected.
