 The Kindle Fire, a tablet version of Amazon.com's Kindle e-book reader  built with Quanta Computer,was announced in September 2011, featuring a  color 7-inch multi-touch display  and running a custom version of  Google's Android operating system called Fire OS. The device which  included access to the Amazon Appstore, streaming movies TV shows and  music, as well as Kindle's e-book,s was released to consumers in  November 2011.
 
 In September 2012, the Kindle Fire was upgraded to a second generation, its price reduced, RAM upgraded to 1 GB and processor clock speed upgraded to 1.2 GHz. A more powerful and video-friendly version, the Kindle Fire HD (7 and 8.9 inch versions) was also made available. In September 2013, the Kindle Fire HD was upgraded to the third generation and the Kindle Fire HDX was introduced.
 
 In September 2014, the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 and the Kindle Fire HDs were upgraded to the fourth generation of Fire tablets and the Fire HD 6, Fire HD 7, and Fire HDX 8.9. The current generation of these devices abandon 'Kindle' branding. Current generation devices are powered by Fire OS 4 “Sangria,” a next generation of software based on Android 4.4 (KitKat).
