Is Netscape in the tornado?
I think that, in order to understand and evaluate Netscape Communications Corporation’s prospects as a business and an investment, it is necessary to understand what the company must do, and what it is trying to do, in order to succeed in the marketplace. It appears to me that Netscape is following the business and marketing strategy outlined in "Inside The Tornado," by Geoffrey A. Moore (Harper-Collins Publishers). Using the analytical framework outlined in the book, therefore, I would like for us to evaluate Netscape’s strategy.
Before posting contributions to this thread, please read "Inside The Tornado." After you’ve read the book, read what postings are already here. Then, taking into account what has already been said, try to answer the following questions:
Do the ideas expressed in the book make sense?
Is Netscape following a business plan based on the ideas in the book?
Is Netscape succeeding, according to the criteria in the book (assuming they are valid)?
Are there things Netscape could be doing better?
What are the implications for Microsoft?
We should all try to stay on top of news about Netscape, post it here when we can, and try to ask what the news is really conveying about Netscape in light of the book’s ideas and prescriptions.

The best posts are the ones that come up with convincing challenges to the ideas already expressed or that explore the topic in a new and innovative way. Although people can post whatever they want, I would like to avoid discussions here about the technical condition of Netscape’s stock. There are other places for that.
