RoamAD is an unlisted startup New Zealand company, which has developed technology to enable metropolitan areas to be covered with WiFi 802.11b [and upgrades] to give mobile internet access without disconnection while enjoying high data rates at low cost.

I've used it. It works. I also bought shares in the company.

Lucent is also working on it. They've got a swanky new handoff system between 802.11b and cdma2000 1xEV-DO.

Intel has been pushing WiFi via their Centrino chip.

WiFi momentum has built up greatly over the past couple of years. PDA devices with WiFi are becoming common. skype.com enables VOIP via WiFi, plus instant message servies.
