Return to Current Events and General Interest Bits & Pieces

This thread is a place to post articles that others might find interesting, on a range of topics. I hope it can be a relatively concise running record of topical stories that people might actually be able to go back and read to see how things were covered over time. Topics I'll be posting on include the eponymous current events, science, technology, and books, maybe even a little sports, plus whatever else catches my interest. Others may contribute as they see fit, but please, dont try to turn this into yet another grinding stone for your favorite axe, whatever that may be.

Guidelines: When posting external sources, try to lead your posts with an author, headline / titles and link to full text. And do try to post external sources as much as possible. Try not to post entire articles unless the links are known to be volatile or you dont have a link. Try to post an excerpt that will catch people's interest. Try to avoid editorial page / op-ed type commentary. A few comments are ok; extensive "debate" in the SI style will not be looked on kindly. Google is your friend.

Zero-tolerance events:

1. Demonstrations of Godwin's Law.
2. Complaints about the NYT in particular or the "liberal media" in general.
3. Calling anybody a traitor.

No warnings, discussion, or appeal on any of those 3. In general, I'd prefer as close to zero traffic on moderation issues as possible. If you really need to go into those things, I'd suggest one of the other 50k threads on SI, or you can just start your own.
