Read the Snopes article carefully. It was troubling to me, in that it started out with the flat statement "False", but wound up with rather biased commentary wherein the author thinks that the test is unlikely to be accurate. Not the same thing.

Further, another test given as an example (of teachers in the 1870s) indicated that the level of knowledge, while in some respects was arcane, was certainly quite large for persons of the time.

The author sneers at the idea that education was "better" on some subjects a hundred years ago, then gives a number of statements to prove that, by some measures, it indeed was.
