Re: Arms race

It's already happening. Barry Jaspan (the interMute author) has been tweaking it throughout its history to "fine tune" the filtering. I personally believe that the blockers will always have the upper hand because ultimately the PC as a programmable device controls what it displays--unlike a passive TV "receiver".

The PVR article is interesting but seems a bit dated. Virtually all of the TV viewing I do (with the exception of CNBC during the day) is on taped delay anyway, so ads are fast-forwarded. Interestingly the only exception is the SuperBowl, which I tape and then fast-forward through the game to watch the ads. I'm sure I'm just weird in this regard, but it does point out that advertisers must get used to the idea that they have to entice and entertain rather than bludgeon viewers with their messages. For this reason the ad model that I feel will ultimately work on the net is the infomercial (or its hyperlinked equivalent). The only thing I'm confident of is that the current house of cards will not endure.
