As mentioned in the August issue of Wired magazine (p. 140), I recently visited intermute.com and downloaded a copy of interMute 1.0. This amazing program sits quietly in the background and works transparently alongside your web browser to automatically filter out advertizing from web pages you view. As a bonus, web pages load faster since you're not wasting bandwidth downloading ad clutter. As far as I can tell, interMute is still private, but I still think it is worthwhile to discuss how technology such as this will impact the economic assumptions of "portals" and others who are banking on using the net as another TV-like medium for funnelling advertizing to a new class of couch potato.
