I've read in several places that of the total surfing time in the US less than 1% is done with add blocking. If that were to change I think you'd see an "arms race" where innovative new html and java would hide advertisements from the blockers on an ongoing basis. Even so, if 5% of people are using a blocker they are probably the 5% least likely to click on an advertisement anyway. I think the real challenge is to make advertisements less frequent and jarring and more relevant. Tivo and Replay are about to change television by using more of a sponsorship model rather than hurling extraneous advertisements at the viewer. Maybe this will become a model for the internet - one day The Gap will sponsor the entire Salon Web site but not put a banner at the top of every page.
