Kopin Corp. here has introduced a new wafer semiconductor material that the company said simplifies fabrication of high-frequency ICs wireless and fiber optic communication applications.

The company said its new indium gallium phosphide (InGaP) emitter wafers will enable device manufacturers to produce smaller, less expensive and more reliable circuits because it eases the task of precisely etching emitter layers in ICs. Kopin's InGaP wafers have been engineered to incorporate full heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) devices within their layer structures.

In Japan, Sharp Corp. has tested the new wafer material. "We believe that InGaP HBTs will take HBT technology to the next level of circuit
applications," said John Twynam with Sharp in Tenri, Japan. "In addition to being simpler to process, which helps improve yields, InGaP HBT devices have the potential to perform in a greater range of power and temperature conditions."

This wafer appears to be targeted toward a specific market, so I don't know how this might effect MEMEC's business or perhaps they are developing similiar wafers?
