Hi Kirk,

Yikes, it has been a long day, spending too many hours at the hospital and cooking an extra meal of chicken wings in black bean, garlic sauce over to my parents so that they can have it tomorrow.

I re-read your first post (which I obviously read too quickly this afternoon and fatigue increases the dyslexia) and I need to clarify, I meant it was "wonderful" that your mom and aunt had French as a mother tongue; I love the language.

But it was awful that they were teased. Having been bullied countless times at school for my language, food, and looks (but never daring to tell my parents), I understand first-hand how awful bullying is and how long that sting of negativity lasts. I am truly sorry that it was so hard on your mom and your aunt.

When my kids were growing up, I impressed upon them that it was wrong and to speak up if it happened to them or if they saw it happening to anyone else. Funny thing is that my kids basically grew up as polyglots (speaking 5-6 languages with native proficiency). So when my son was ridiculed by the neighborhood kids in Yiddish, his natural reaction was to retort loudly in German. I was kind of proud of his spunk lol! He grew up to become someone who always makes an extra effort to connect and speak to patients in their own language :)
