Japanese whaling is an important USA foreign policy issue. Whales eat a huge amount of fish, krill and other things in the food chain, then die and drop it all to the ocean floor.

Food production from the oceans would be improved if whales and other large predators such as white pointer sharks, were greatly reduced in numbers.

It's a bit like the huge herds of protected elephants rampaging across the landscape eating people out of house and home and standing on them if they resist.
