Dorothy, My background is on the technology side (Ph.D. in Biochemistry)
and I'm better at long term (2-5 years) than short term predicting.
Assuming no news comes out before the open (the spike at the end
of the day may have signalled some news - LGND was in the July 1 Barron's
cover story on fat baby boomers. On Friday, June 28, price and
volume exploded (since there was no news, I'm fairly certain that
word of the Barron's story leaked out). The price rose modestly
on Monday and then fell back (the article was generally favorable for
LGND, but the author added a word of caution because of the large
short position on LGND. However, the author didn't do his homework.
LGND's short position is actually an arbitrage position - short LGND
and buy ALRIZ, which contains 2 five year warrants for LGND and it has
remained virtually unchanged since LGND brought ALRIZ public 1 1/2
years ago).
However, back to your question. I would say a limit of 15 would be
reasonable. If I'm wrong and there isn't a big spike, you will own
LGND at a good price. If the price spikes higher than 15 at the
open, I suspect it will settle back below that number temporarily.
If you are looking at a long term investment (which I recommend), a
market order will do just fine for the long haul because even if it
gaps and falls back, it will soon move above the open price.
