I don't work for the TelCos, John. Sorry to dissapoint you.

I am an independent software developer who trades tech stocks from his home as an additional revenue producer. I am one of the people who has the most to "lose" if this .10 charge is effected.

However, I took some public policy courses in grad school and I know a scam when I see one; and the current situation is a complete scam perpetrated on the RBOCs by the ISPs.

Most of the heavy internet users fall in 2 camps:

1. The relatively highly paid (mainly technical) professionals such as myself and probably yourself.

2. The under-employed (read: lots of free time) who use the net for "fun". This group is mostly hooked up through AOL or EarthLink or similar and includes most the porno surfers. Event if the rest of us were into that worthless crap we simply don't have time. I have a family to support.

Although Group 1 does pay quite a hefty amount of taxes, we are still getting the deal of the century in the form of a $20/month unlimited ISP. Group 2 is getting the deal of the millenium.

So who is paying for Group1 and Group2's free ride? Quite simple: the taxpayers and local phone service users who aren't even using the net. Group 1 and Group 2 are doing their long-hours surfing on the backs of non-net user.

This is not fair. This is not beneficial for society. And it will not continue for long because ultimately the economics will make it very clear to those who legislate our society that the situation is head towards disaster.

You seem to have an incredible bias against TelCos. Most people who work for TelCos are not rich and have little opportunity to become so. The web i-bankers, v.c.s, and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and NYC Soho who are most vocally against the TelCos' proposal are all shootin' the moon looking to become multi-zillionaires like Andreesen and Yang -- or else they are already super-wealthy like Gates and Case.

Who do you think is more likely to be personally compromised in their assessment of what is right for society? Once again in America we have a situation where the greedy rich elite speak only for themselves and twist the truth around. I am willing to stand up and say that that is BULLSHIT.

At least I have the honesty and social conscience to admit that I am presently taking advantage of society by way of loopholes in the law. Either you do not understand the situation, or you are someone who believes that living off the backs of others is fair.

I am perfectly willing to pay a fair rate for the incredible technology that others have worked long and hard to provide to me. Under the current infrastructure, $20 per month for unlimited usage is not a fair rate; it is far too litte. I would be willing to pay substantially more, considering the awesome information retrieval technology and content the web provides me.

Most of the porno surfers will not be willing to do so, and I say good riddance to them.
