I totally agree with everything you said... and you said it much better than I could.

This is very interesting thing you indicated about self-control being easier ot tougher depending on the degree of contradiction between the set of beliefs and trading system.
I can think right away of one example: it's common knowledge that trader is better off perceiving market as indifferent environment, not as hostile. For many traders born in civilized countries like USA environment that doesn't care about them feels like hostile. For me, with my Soviet background and hatred for Big Brother taking care of me, market rather feels as friendly just because it wouldn't care about me :) Less contradiction like you say.
