Obviously, the $750,000 grant SMDX got to develop a better and faster way to assess pulmonary function doesn't mean they'll succeed in coming up with a commercially viable product. But, as an investor, I'm looking at risk/reward and it seems that given its miniscule $5 million market-cap the risk/reward ratio for SMDX is decent enough for me to bet a few bucks. As for my favorite micro-cap biotechs these days: Like Rick Harmon I'm a KDUS fan; also I've put more than my usual bet down on TRPS – not priced in the one buck range but with under 4 million shares out still a micro-cap.
