I'm not sure how much your shorting but if it's more than 1000 shares it may be harder to short. I've also found out on high volume stocks in the first 5 minutes in the morning what we see on E-Trade as the market price is behind the actual trades, I've learned this on COMS numerous times and no longer place trades during large volume in short time periods. Further, everything happens by computer on most of the trades under 1000 shares in companies like DELL so the market maker doesn't even get involved. Just some things I've learned by talking to the E-Trade people.
