I think there are people who really enjoy being part of, and identifying with, a group of people, even a large group of people. Chanting in unison is a way to promote that feeling. Gives me the willies, for the most part, although I do enjoy saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing (trying to sing) the National Anthem and hymns in church. But those are voluntary acts - if I were obligated to do them it would rankle.
