You did the right thing. The cat could've been just a cat. It could've been a child's pet. Or it could've been a member of a family who would've worried and grieved for ages. You never know.

P.S. I once opened the wood stove door and my two eyes looking in met one looking out. Turns out a black squirrel inside a sooty wood stove isn't easy to see. Once outside, we noticed a nicked ear we could identify him with. We saw that squirrel around our property for a year or so after.
