Of course we are not Japan, but do not ignore the problems they have had the past 10 years. It can happen here.
Anyone that thinks it can't is wearing rose colored glasses.
Chance of the same thing here is 2 in 10.

Good points William...

Wait... Let me put on my rose colored glasses... Ahhh... That's better... : >

I agree that you and I and the rest of America will be paying more than we want to pay, but I don't see any alternative right now... The Japanese business culture is far different than our own... Our independent spirit of entrepreneurship will help find a way back to a robust economy... It's just a matter of switching our mindset to a new kind of wartime mentality... We have the people and the engines to make lemonaide out of a lemon of a situation...

Back in 1992 when people were declaring doom and gloom for Florida compliments of Hurricane Andrew, the economic forces adjusted, as they do in a market economy... Florida bounced back stronger than ever... Insurance rates also came back into equalibrium when it was realized that these catastrophies don't come along every day... The same will happen in New York and around the country... Al Qaeda hit us with their best punch on 9/11... We're still standing... Now we're doing the punching... Their followup is a series of Anthrax letters that have so far claimed 4 lives... They're running out of gas and a cohesive network here and abroad... We're just beginning to step on the gas...

I don't see any mass exodus from New York... It's likely that Mike Bloomburg will win the Mayoral race... He's an experienced businessman who will be in the right place at the right time for New York... Also, the U.S. Gov't will do whatever it has to do to bring the economic engine (NY) of the U.S. back as quickly as possible... The resiliency of the stock market is telling us this... It's making a lot of hedge fund managers on the short side have sleepless nights... I kinda like that... : >

So, we'll have to walk before we can run... But run we will... : >
