Probably not a bad idea, although-- the notion of choosing the best general ever,- regardless of era, is intriguing.
But comparing generals of differing vintages would probably be hampered by similar problems that hamstring the attempt to contrast sports figures from different eras: its a different game these days, techniques have evolved so much, global recruiting has fortified the talent pool, big money has impacted the activity, etc. <g>
