And I am confused as to why there is export restrictions. As fast as I know these are not bleeding edge devices.
SiC is bleeding edge, especially with the new ion implantation process at very high temperatures. See my FB group for the story of that.

There are export restrictions on devices and materials that can be used to make advanced weapons... think laser guided missals, EMP devices, high power radar, FAST PCs and other types of processing... Probably a whole bunch of "classified" stuff that you'd need a good imagination to guess.

II-VI makes some pretty impressive lasers for industrial use (cutting metal, etc.) too. My guess is those could be aimed at "incoming" and take out the electronic brains and or blind their sensors...
