Quick net search revealed the following - Impeached but not convicted In 1868 the struggle between Johnson and Congress came to a head. In defiance of the Tenure of Office, which Congress had passed over presidential veto in 1867, Johnson attempted to fire his secretary of war, Edwin M. Stanton. Congress responded by impeaching the President for "high crimes and misdemeanors." After a trial lasting several months (March-May 1868), the Senate found Johnson not guilty. (The tally was only one vote shy of the two-thirds majority needed for conviction; seven Republicans had voted with the Democrats for acquittal. grolier.com
